Ah, not necessarily. Ripping to lossless flac and then streaming wirelessly to a Squeezebox will generally produce results at least as good as the original CD if not better, as long as the rip is done correctly.

I have yet to hear a CD on my Denon 3910 that sounds better than the same source ripped to flac and streamed to my Squeezebox. Removing the CD player from the chain results in a cleaner sound with much less grain, at least in my system. My Squeezebox is awesome!

But that opinion is echoed time and time again in other Squeezebox-related threads, and this is not really the place, I suppose...

    YMMV,

    Chris

Do these albums approach, say, the quality of the MFSL "Dark side of the Moon"?

No these are better because the MFSL has smiley-faced EQ.

That's not the same as listening to it on his computer.

Well...you will reconsider when I tell you my setup.
The files are ripped to flac.
I have a squeezebox that connects from my pc to my stereo.
The squeezebox sounds better than my cd player....

If you don't know what I'm talking about....then you need to get a squeezebox.
They sound better than most cd players at half the price.

    Edit: Apparently I didn't read the whole thread.......Flashgordon....dude....your getting a squeezebox......BTW I don't stream it wireless....I have a ethernet hookup.

Apples and oranges! Regarding "School's Out". DSOTM is a benchmark recording. "School's Out", well, is not.

If you're asking about the mastering, AF (OK, Steve) does a better job than MFSL. Straight down the board in my opinion. And "SO" is no exception.

It's also not the same as listening to it on a dedicated CDP through a system either. :)

I think that may depend on who you ask. I've no personal experience with the Squeezebox, but I understand the arguments for ripping and playing back digital audio from a hard drive. There's a good argument that I'm missing out on something by listening on my dedicated CD Player. I'm not familiar with the D/A functions in the squeezebox, but he's playing it through his system and not his computer speakers. IMHO, the typical tweaked sound of those little speakers would represent the better part of that "deficiency" no? If THAT deficiency doesn't exist, what's the point we're making here?

Besides... if I'm not mistaken this is a territory forum rules frown upon, no? The "I'm judging your system to be crap" area, I mean.

It's his first time, be nice.......there are much weirder posts, just look at the some of the tweakposts! Ah what an audiophile wil do for good sound. Maybe those panties could be used for a damper underneath the cd player when using the HDCD circuit by interested parties.....:)

    It's just a question!
There are lots of people who don't care for the extra's and only go for the music.

I'm just a big Alice fan.
If there would be something extra with the CARS - heartbeat cd and a CARS fan would ask for that I wouldn't hesitate to give it to him/her.

Would you buy them used? :D

    Kidding

  22. Why? One person already gave away his panties to another forum member, since he wasn't interested in them. There could be another forum member who doesn't care much about the panties. It's a legitimate question, but maybe he should be posed in the Classifieds section (although new members have to wait for a while before they can post there).

I am comparing with my original "Warner Brothers 927 260-2 France WE 835 - made in Germany 1989". I am a huge Alice fan and School's Out is a favorite of mine I have heard many many times.

The new AF disc is slightly louder. The volume levels needs to be matched in order to make a fair comparison. Doing that and comparing the two versions by a direct switch there is indeed very little difference. I tried theese tracks:

School's Out - slight but noticeable difference
Blue Turk - slight but noticeable difference
Alma Matters - almost identical - unable to tell apart
Luney Tune - almost identical - unable to tell apart

Not knowing which version was which until deciding the best sounding, I have the sad duty to report that I chose the original for both School's Out and Blue Turk. This might have something to do with the fact that I have heard this album 100+ times and have grown used to the sound.

I have around 25 of Steve's masterings. All of them sound great and much better than the original. This release is different.

Maybe the French/German release is much better than the American? What version are you guys comparing with?

Perhaps they just got it right the first time around? It happens, sometimes. I'm sure Steve isn't going to make drastic EQ moves just for the sake of making his mastering sound different than what's already out there.

What's the point of that? That's kind of like buying a piece of art and throwing it in a vault where no one can appreciate it.
