Pop hitmaker, cult icon, and Memphis rock icon iconoclast Alex Chilton has died.

The singer and guitarist, best known as a member of '60s pop-soul act the Box Tops and the '70s power-pop act Big Star, died today at a hospital in New Orleans. Chilton, 59, had been complaining of about his health earlier today. He was taken by paramedics to the emergency room where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack.

His Big Star bandmate Jody Stephens confirmed the news this evening. Chilton had been scheduled to perform with Big Star on Saturday as part at the annual South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

I'm glad Alex got to experience the resurgence of Big Star, and how much they meant to so many people.

    RIP Alex.

    Wow, very sad:shake:

As a New Orleanian, it was a common sight to see Alex hanging around some of the cooler record stores back in the day, especially the Magic Bus.

Very sad news. I had been checking to see when he would have some solo dates listed, or even a Box Tops or Big Star show in my area, and have seen nothing listed for many months/years.

He is the kind of player I expected to be around forever, playing little dives into his late 60s or 70s. I guess time is moving on.

I did get to see a solo show in LA back in around 90/91 at McCabes. So glad I at least saw him live.

Oh my, how sad. I was very much looking forward to seeing Big Star this year.

He certainly gave us so much of himself over the years. All I can say is thank you, Alex.

    And rest in peace.

  24. Man, this gave me a start tonight. I have to admit I was never a huge fan, but like others I expected him to be one of those guys who would be around for a long time yet; he's always seemed to be lurking around, doing something, as long as I've been paying attention to non-top-40 music so it'll be a bit weird to know he's not out there anymore. Time to put on a certain Replacements song and pour a drink...RIP.
