Paris Motel ‘In the Salpêtrière’ .

Not easy to find a parallel to classic rock, but here goes. Imagine the Rolling Stones except Keith Richards brains himself falling out of a coconut tree only to be promptly fired by a huffy Mick Jagger. The rest of the band promptly quits and Jagger decides to replace them too - with a classical string ensemble. Then Jagger begins composing a chamber pop album, but decides at his advancing age that he no longer has the vocal chops to pull it off. He then resigns and is relaced by one Amy Mae, classically trained in piano, violin and the viola, and with a voice like a sultry Grace Slick - only much softer around the edges. Amy Mae then scraps all of Jagger's original material - replacing it with even better music that sounds nothing whatsoever like the Rolling Stones. That's exactly what this sounds like.

I don't think I've yet bought any records from this year. I will on Tuesday, though. Meshuggah's "obZen" will be released in North America, and I'm confident that it will be astounding.

There are still 2008 albums from R.E.M., U2, Oasis, and Coldplay to look forward to, but it's going to be tough for anyone to top Goldfrapp's and Shelby Lynne's new albums.

The new Malkmus is great, Vampire Weekend is good, Mountain Goats' Heretic Pride is also very good. Looking forward to new Breeders and Shearwater.

    The single is awesome:

There was a cool article about them in Rolling Stone. Some of these songs were destined to be part of an Ike Turner album produced by Danger Mouse. Ike passed, so DM finished it as a Keys album.

Black Mountain, Bob Mould, Drive-By Truckers, Goldfrapp, Autechre, Aiden John Moffat, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, The Gutter Twins, American Music Club

cool re-issues by Burning Witch, Nick Lowe, Motown Singles Volume 9

sure i've missed something......a healthy bank balance due to the above, being one thing.

That's great stuff, buckeye. You're right ... it sounds straight out of Bob Pollard's basement. More good tunes on their MySpace, too.

Do you have their first two albums also?

Unfortunately, no. This was my introduction to them. I may go back and check out the last one though, it got some good write up's from Pitchfork & Drowned In Sound.

I second that... Magnificent Fiend is a great listen. It's very heartening to know that music like this is still being made.

not sure what to make of this album yet but it is fascinating to say the least:

Jay Reatard - Blood Visions. Listen to 'My Family' first, a top song.

The Emigrate album came and went without much fanfare, i thought it was pretty good.

The Fleet Foxes EP is amazing.

White Hinterland is going to be a good one too but it's probably too soon to tell.

The Born Ruffians first single of the new album is quite good. not for all tastes though.

Congrats, dj2, that has to be the first time Jay Reatard has ever been mentioned on this board.

I like what I've heard, but the cover photo scares/disgusts me.

(and isn't that album from 2006?)

you're right. i just checked the cd. i guess because he's touring Australia at the moment and it's the first time i'd ever heard of him, it kind of felt like it came out this year.oh well. still a top album.

as for the album cover, i hope no animal suffered in the making of it.
