The only problem with this is that without using the pre-emphasis on burning you end up with overly inflated top and bottom frequencies that are also smeared. The definition does suffer as well.

On PC I use Exact Audio Copy, there's nothing like it.

Yes, so I've read. I'm on a Mac, and according to the EAC website, a port to the Mac is not in the cards.

I read elsewhere that iTunes was good for ripping discs with Pre-Emphasis. I tried it, and didn't seem to hear any difference with the copies made. Maybe the discs I tried with iTunes didn't have Pre-Emphasis in the first place?

Anyone else have success with iTunes and Pre-Empahasis discs? Any alternatives for a Mac?

From my brief searches on the site hydrogenaudio.com:

I found that if you're on a Mac, iTunes is the only Mac OS software that supposedly has Pre-Emphasis adjusting going on in ripping a cd with a Pre-Emphasis flag, and according to one lister, does it pretty well - although the exact numbers for the "curve" that iTunes supposedly applies are unknown.

After months of regular checking and seeing declared Wish You Were Here 2-track discs go for astronomical sums...

The other day, I saw a listing that seemed "let's take a chance"-worthy. There was only one photo: at an angle, showing the cover art (with the compact disc logo in the lower right corner), in a smooth-sided case. A one word description: "great".

$3.75 buy-it-now, with $2.99 shipping. What the hell?

The package arrived today, and when I opened it up, I started looking at the details and feeling my heart stop. Matrix 35DP-4 71A4. CSR Compact Disc repeating 3 times around the hub. Disc made in Japan. Read as 2 tracks in Windows Media Player.

Tonight, I will be enjoying a sip from the Grail.

great story. I got mine by buying a CD lot with many other discs not just Pink Floyd cool thing was there was also a black face Dark Side (japan) and about another 8 or 10 discs if I remember right the lot price ended at under $60 with the 2 track WYWH included. I did ask ahead of time about the matrix on the WYWH disc so I knew what was coming.
