I don't think this has been posted. I just got this from Sony Legacy. Street date is March 20.

SLY & THE FAMILY STONE – Legacy upgrades the catalog! (Epic/Legacy)

    * In 1967, this interracial, mixed-gender combo harnessed all the disparate social and musical trends of the era and burst on the scene with a debut album that completely shook up the musical landscape with its fusion of soul, rock, R&B, psychedelia, and an emerging genre, soon to be dubbed “funk.” The sound was powerful and joyous, delivering everything one hoped to find in music -- the thrill of the new, a galvanizing groove, and lyrics that actually said something. This thrilling combination saw Sly permanently perched at the top of the album and single charts of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, and quickly established his legacy as one of the most innovative artists in music history. 2007 will mark 40 years from the band’s first release, and Legacy is celebrating with a long-awaited upgrade of the Sly & the Family Stone catalog. Each of the seven studio albums will be available in limited-edition, lavish digipaks. Each title will feature restored and expanded packaging, including rare photos, memorabilia, and new liner notes by a diverse group of writers and artists. A bounty of bonus tracks -- many of them previously unreleased -- will be spread across all seven titles.

I was hoping for a 'Riot' box set but I'll take an upgrade. I wonder who's doing (or did) the mastering?

This is great news, especially "Small Talk", which as been AWOL domestically since the dawn of the CD era. I can't figure out why they still won't give "High on You" the time of day. "Crossword Puzzle" is one of my favorite 70s Sly tracks. The title track was on the "Essential" compilation.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that it is credited to Sly Stone as a solo act. If so, that's a pretty silly reason to keep it out of circulation for decades.

    Regards,

"Restored and expanded packaging," with a big ugly FBI logo smack dab in the middle of it, no doubt. :D

Although packaging-wise, almost anything would be an improvement over what There's a Riot Goin' On looks like in its original CD incarnation:

I'd be surprised if it wasn't Anesini.

I don't have any other info than I posted, but I think that Michael's right on this.

If, and that's a big if, these really do come out, does it bode well for the possibility of the pulled Sly & The Family Stone live disc from 2 years ago will come out? You guys remember what I'm talking about? It was a completely new unreleaased show from the vintage days.

yep I remember it was on P&P for a long time, then pushed and then gone.

Man, to have a sonically upgraded Riot would be a treat. I remember reading a huge debate here about that cd awhile ago (probably archived).

By not touching them, I hope. The album sounds perfect as it is.

Let's hope they use the original cover for A Whole New Thing, an lp I loved when I was 12 or so. Sly integrated audiences with his blend of rock/soul/funk...the first 4 (5?) are essential!! (and beat anything that is trying to imitate it today by a longshot!!!)

I refuse to get excited until a week after they come out.

Semi-related, I was able to score a test copy of what was to be the Fillmore release. I can kind of see why they didn't release it. It sounds good and the performances are great, but it is two sets from the same night, so basically you would get each song twice.

I hope some of the bonus tracks that are released will be live. From the boots I've heard, Sly & the Family Stone were a kick @$$ band.

If it's Vic, he's got a pretty light touch, so I'm sure they'll sound great.

I won't be too thrilled if the bonus material is just live tracks....if they have live tracks then issue a seperate live CD...stop soaking us for those 2CD expanded editions and making the 2nd disc a live disc.
If they do this right they'll include the mono 45 versions along with outtakes/unreleased tracks and then if they want some live tracks..ok.
I think the first priority has to be studio tracks from the sessions along with the 45 mixes.....just my 2 cents of course.

    Great news.

I hope Anesini is doing the mastering. He did a wonderful job on the Essential set.

    Hi,

If this is a Vic Anesini job and has the same quality as Essential, I'll be happy. I would love the Stereo remixes or Mono single versions or both on key tracks. If these are as good, Come To Papa! This catalogue is one of the most needed for improvements as many of these aren't that good if not all.

I'm happy to hear this, although I did pick up many of the discs a few months ago as they were becoming scarce, just in case. I'm looking forward to seeing what the bonus tracks are...

This is great. BUT....what about the long-promised 2 CD 1968 Fillmore concert? Is that coming out too? Didn't Legacy announce this in 2002, but aborted?

Seemed like a good opportunity for my first post. Quite a few years ago, I picked up Sly's Fresh, when it was first released on CD. I listened to it and my jaw dropped - it was a radically different mix of the album (and a very cool mix at that)! I later bought another copy of the CD in a used shop, and that had the original album mix. Does anyone know the story behind this? I have asked this question on the net before and never received a response.

So Sony is releasing all 7 titles on the same day ?? In the past they've dragged out Legacy catalog reissues for months (or years). I hope they are all out on the same day rather then have 3 titles come out and then have the remaining titles linger forever(like BOC). This is great news !
