I have a made in Canada version on the Verve label and a Polydor made in the U.S.A version...

    Different EAC peak levels....

The beginning of the first song is truncated on the Verve whereas it is not (you can hear the amp beating with tremelo for about 5 - 10 seconds....)

    What gives?

Anyone know what is up with these two variations?

Thanx of course in advance of your contributions to this discussion...I am not at home but will be in a while to facilitate with information if necessary....

Well I'm curious what you find out and what you feel is the better sounding disc, as this is one of my favorite bands.

What's the total time for track 1, and the entire Canadian disc? I have the USA Polydor. Track 1 is 5:33, including the 17 seconds of amp-beating.....total disc time is 43:30.

  6. I have the box set version of Laughing Stock. Not sure how long the total length is..

For a second there I thought you meant a boxset-length version of that album, ala the Pet Sounds sessions!

  9. No, this is a 3cd box set that contains the Laughing Stock album (on 3 cd pic discs). IT's from the UK and sounds great. I like the remastered '97 EMI UK produced cd's as well.

Does anyone know if this was ever released on SACD? I've only ever seen the SACD's of Colour Of Spring and Spirit Of Eden (which I have and sounds fantastic).

I don't think so. Laughing Stock was on a different label (the SACD duo were on EMI), so wouldn't have been part of a series.

BTW, how many Talk Talk fans known about the Mark Hollis self-titled album from 1997?

I've got it, quite a languid listen, I love it, not for everyone, certainly the follow up to expect after Laughing Stock.

It bothers me. He sounds very very deep in trouble. It sounds spontaneous and unrehearsed (not in a good way, more like musicians have no idea what on earth Hollis is doing). It's too skeletal and unformed for me.

I have it, love it, bought a second copy at Tower Records on sale for $4.99 for my cousin. But, rarely listen to it. It has pretty good sound, if a little soft.

I also have the two 'O'Rang cd's (Paul Webb and Lee Harris, post-Talk Talk), "HERD OF INSTINCT" and "Fields and Waves" (great, somewhat Can-like music, a more dynamic and progressive sounding continuation of their evolving sound in later Talk Talk) but dreadful sound quality. Bright, but glaringly so.
Anyone hear the vinyl versions of these two?
How about the vinyl versions of Lauging Stock and Spirit of Eden?

I too am curious if there is a difference in sound between the Canadian and US and UK cd versions of Laughing Stock. How about it? Anything noticeable?

I have bought two copies of the UK Spirit of Eden vinyl. Both are very, very noisy in exactly the same way. Looks as if the (one only?) UK vinyl pressing of this album was botched. Never seen Laughing Stock on vinyl.

I do have a copy of the Mark Hollis solo on vinyl (just as well, as I've mislaid my CD copy of it). Lovely thick vinyl, but side two is noisy and side one has a few loud pops. This was a sealed LP too.

Believe it or not, I think this was the first album where Hollis actually wrote a score for the musicians!

I have an EMI pressing of Spirit of Eden, not played recently but don't remember it being very noisy. I also have an EMI pressing of It's My Life which sounds excellent and is definitely quiet.

I have Simply Vinyl's pressing of 'The Colour of Spring', it sounds good and tonally similar to the original EMI CD I have. It's also dead quiet. A general rule of thumb with SV is to stick to British acts where they are likely to have access to better sources.
