Way, way back in the early 90's (best guess, I'd say sometime between 1989 and 1993), I had a radio promo-only Reggae compliation CD (single disc) that was called...

    96 Degrees in the Shade

It clocked in at about 70-minutes, as I recall -- so practically a double-LP's worth of material.

I'm struggling to remember what all the tracks were on that disc (song names and artist names). As I recall, it had several tunes from the "The Harder They Come" soundtrack.

Anybody have any leads or info?? I'd love to find (and purchase) the disc itself (for a reasonable price), but even just a track-listing would be infinitely helpful. Thanks!!

Edit: I seem to remember that it was a Mango promo.

Well, haven't come across that disc - and, from what you say, I wouldn't have picked it up anyway because "The Harder They Come" and "96 Degrees in the Shade" (both on Mango) are already in the ol' collection. Unless there's anything else on it not on these two discs.... If you think so, a search would be worthwhile; otherwise, both albums are readily available.

    Thanks for the reply.

FWIW, I'm probably far more interested in finding the tracklisting info than the disc itself.

I'm guessing most of the tracks are fairly available, and I'm figuring I could get most of the material with just a handful of purchases of other compilations and/or original albums.

Not specifically looking to recreate that particular compilation -- but rather I'm getting the itch to get some Reggae, and was just remembering this promo-only comp as being something I really liked, and wish I still had. I figure the tracklisting will be a good roadmap for me towards other puchases with the same or similar material.

"The Harder They Come" is the album that got me started with reggae back in the 70's. Soon after, I saw an article in the old Stereo Review entitled "How to Learn to Love Reggae Music." They raved about a 3-LP set called "Feelin' High" from Columbia House (not in stores) - and that was my next comp.

Some of those tracks are on SH's Reggae Classics CD - so grab that if you haven't already. It's missing some of the good tracks from the Columbia collection (Freddie McKay in particular) because it's only a single CD, but SH did his usual bang-up job in mastering it. From there, you can go in a hundred directions. We've had threads in the past as to what I and our other members recommend in starting and building a reggae library.

Thanks, and FWIW, I did do a search on Reggae here last night and found a couple dozen of threads well worth going back through in some detail in the near future. LOTS of great info to be found around these parts. :)

I have this CD at home - got it as a promo when I worked in a record store - so I believe it has to be earlier than a 90's release. I will check that when I get home from work, and I will also post the tracklisting at that time.

I think I may have this CD as well, but may take some digging to find it. I'll try to find it and post, if nobody else provides the tracklisting first.

That tracklist is correct (as I have the disc in my hands right now). I thought I got this CD when I worked in a record store, but it is dated 1989 (and it is "For Promotional Use Only - Not For Sale"). Now I am not sure if I purchased it in a used CD store, or if a friend of mine (from the record store I worked in just a year or so before) gave it to me? Regardless.....

Nice trilogy of Lee Perry productions sandwiched in the middle there!
If you like those, be sure to get the 3CD set of 'Arkology' for more of his productions!

    Many thanks!!!

Last night I had done about 20 different searches on Google, but there were SO many search hits on "96 Degrees In The Shade" (which is the name of a tune), that I couldn't find anything about this particular obscure promo (even including "promo" and "mango" in the search key).

    In any case, thanks again!!

  14. I have it too, just too lazy to type in the tracklist;). So I let iTunes type, and I copy. I did let it play through after I lifted the track list and that stretch of three songs does stand out. I like the whole thing for sure. I'm also wondering where I got it. It might have come attached to another Island CD.
Perhaps some of the early Bob Marley's I bought.

CCD 9843...if that's any help in your search. Great Bay Distribution in Baltimore sent us several boxes of these. I only kept one.

Since the track list has already been posted, I'll just shamelessly add that I've got one too.

Don't suppose anybody'd want to part with theirs?? -- or got a line on a reasonably-priced copy somewhere?

    Thanks!!

Thanks also for the scans, Wilkie. Couldn't remember what it looked like when I first started this thread, but I sure recognize it now.

I remember seeing this for sale at Aron's Records in Hollywood for some insane price ($40-$50) and wondering why it was so much. I seem to recall that it was a magazine freebie in the late 80's.

I definitely remember seeing Abraham Benrubi there - it was during the Parker Lewis Can't Lose days. Why isn't this on DVD?

I don't see why anyone would pay more than $10 for this sampler. Nice, but it's all very common, easily found tracks.

$10 or so is probably about what I'd pay for it.

Anybody got one they'd like to get rid of??

  22. I have this disc. If I recall correclty, it came with an issue of Musician magazine that I bought at a newstand. Probably in 1988 or 1989.

Dave's point is well-taken. These are great tracks, but you'd serve yourself well to get the discs these tracks came from. War Ina Babylon by Max Romeo and Blackheart Man by Bunny Wailer, for example, are both solid efforts that should be in any reggae fan's collection. The same goes for the Heptones, Jacob Miller, Junior Murvin and most of the others as well. You'd really be selling yourself short if you just stuck with this sampler, assuming you dig reggae half as much as I do.

I bought this under the name GROOVE YARD which is what you should look up on AMG, they have a couple of seller links under the picture. Solid stuff, an obvious tracklist but a fine one.
