I had to get this off my chest. As much as I love The Beatles, I just cant understand the attraction to any of their post-Beatles work. It is so awfully dated sounding, lacking chemistry, and much of it missing the fundamental guitar, bass, drums, vocals approach that I love so much. Hopefully this will not be taken as a flame against any of the Beatles ...but maybe they should have each called it quits after breaking up? Is there anyone else who loves the Beatles music, but loathes their post-breakup work? Why?

After they broke up the stopped being The Beatles - life goes on. I like most of the albums Wings, Lennon, Starr, Harrison and McCartney released in the seventies (well, maybe not Starr as much, but there are some good songs on "Ringo").

I guess this means you don't have any DCC discs you can to send to me?

Too seventies sounding? Or not sixties enough?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm glad the Beatles broke up when they did. Look at all the great albums we got from '70 to '73:

    All Things Must Pass
    Imagine
    Plastic Ono Band
    Ram
    Living In The Material World
    McCarthey
    Wings Wild Life
    Band On The Run
    Ringo
    Red Rose Speedway
    Mind Games
    Fly

Not a big deal. We all have our own opinion and taste in music. If you don't like their solo stuff, don't worry about it! ;) You're probably not alone...well...maybe...here...you...are! ;)

Hell no. There's a lot of good material from each of them as solo artists. It may not match up to their collective heights they hit in the 60s but was still better than most of their 70s contemporaries.

Hate is a strong word. I dislike all but:

    Wonderwall Music
    Live Peace Toronto
    JL/POB
Imagine (I guess I hate the title track)
    Mind Games
    Walls and Bridges
    All Things Must Pass
    Ringo
    Band On the Run
    Venus and Mars

all the rest are pretty dire, IMO.

I like some of it more than others but even Ringo (maybe especially Ringo) managed to create a few timeless classics after the band dissolved.

I heard Imagine on the muzak at Krogers the other day. Sounded pretty damned good.

The Beatles stuff was okay, but I far prefer the more mature solo work of the group members.

As far as lacking chemistry, and the fundamental guitar, bass, drums and vocals approach you mentioned, of course it would be that way, seeing as it is no longer the four of them together in the studio as a group.

That being said........to answer your original question....................yes..............YES YOU ARE...........:D

Am I the only one who thinks they were going downhill before they broke up? That THE WHITE ALBUM is a desperate piece of celebrity self-indulgence from people who couldn't be told "No" anymore? That the oft-praised suite on ABBEY ROAD is a musical three-card monte of unfinished ideas not worth finishing? That John Lennon's found poetry and Paul McCartney's ditties quickly became self-parodies?

I'd still want ALL THINGS MUST PASS, RINGO, PLASTIC ONO BAND, IMAGINE, and a good-sounding WINGS GREATEST, but I'm of the opinion that most of the solo albums would not have been released, much less purchased, and far less praised but for the names attached.

Re: Am I the only one who hates the Beatles' solo efforts?

Ok maybe hate was a strong word. I just dont think it was very good is all...which, considering they had to follow what the Beatles accomplished, was a tremendous letdown. Most of it was quite forgettable in my book.

    Surely someone agrees?

Oh, and I came across a youtube video which I thought you all might like. Jeff Beck doing "A Day in the Life" Live... really worth watching if you havent already... http://youtube.com/watch?v=3uwvBizKAwc

I don't agree that they were going downhill. I do think that there is considerable evidence on both albums you've cited of the fact that they weren't working well together anymore. I think both albums are strong despite the lack of cohesion amongst the group; many of the White Album's songs were worked on by the group as a whole (see Kinfauns demos), and the suite and overall sequencing of Abbey Road tends to compensate for the group's disunity. I strongly suspect that, had Abbey Road had a follow-up, we would have begun to see the decline, as it would have proved more difficult to mask a rather disunited group of musicians over the long haul.

Sure, it's an uneven body of work, but I don't find a lot I can actually hate (maybe the usual suspects in McCartney's catalog) I like these a lot:

    #9 Dream
    Instant Karma
    Cold Turkey
    Live and let die
    Junior's Farm
    Let me roll it
    It don't come easy
    Photograph
    What is life
    My sweet Lord

Yeah I'd trade em all for another "She loves you" or "A day in the life" but that's simply asking too much - besides they ALREADY DID IT.

It's only natural that their solo efforts do not quite match those of the group. The Beatles were a "group" in the truest sense of the word. Not one of them could have recreated that environment, or that particular moment in history.

No, you're not the only one.

And everything the members of the Stones have done as solo projects have been less than grand, too. Sometimes the whole is worth more than the sum of its parts.

    That's how I see it.
