I remember hearing "Black Velvet Band" a lot in my younger days. Although "The Unicorn" is fun, I'll give my vote to "BVB".

BTW, Black Velvet Band was the B-side to The Unicorn and they both appear on "The Unicorn" album from 1968, which had been on CD in the mid 90s, now out of print and going for high sums. Luckily, this compilation does have the bulk of the Unicorn album and is still in print in Canada on CD so this comp is for now the in print lower priced alternative to getting the Unicorn album.

I love "Orange and The Green" and have it in my head all the time so it gets my vote.

Black Velvet Band - for me, that's Harry Hibbs.

Actually, most of the songs on that cd I know better by others than the Rovers.

    So I'll vote for "Wasn't That a Party". :)

'Cept, its not on the list :(

Brad, the Orange And The Green is actually a very sad song that should be played slow. I find their changing the words and turning it into a happy 'Irish drinking song' really distasteful

The reason why it isn't on the CD is that it was recorded for Attic/Cleveland International, and not Decca, in 1980.

There is a Canadian 20th Century Masters edition of the Irish Rovers, with 12 tracks, that closes with "Wasn't that a Party"

But, it is not the original hit version on Attic/Cleveland International, but a re-recording. Get one of the Attic Records compilations, the Cleveland International 1977-1983 compilation, or the original album entitled "The Rovers" in Canada and "Wasn't That a Party" in the US for the hit version of "Wasn't That a Party."

Black Velvet Band. I've only actually heard two of them, but I like this one a lot.

John, I do recommend you to pick up an Irish Rovers Greatest Hits CD. You'll really come to appreciate what they have done in music.

Ian and Sylvia do my favourite version, but Nancy Whiskey is great!

I agree. At least you realize that there is more to the Rovers than just "The Unicorn" and "Wasn't That a Party," which are probably the only songs they recorded that are known to the average joe.

Hi Brad, I have the original LP of The Unicorn but not Greatest Hits. I went for The Orange And The Green over The Unicorn but it was a really close call!!! Both songs, and indeed the whole Unicorn album, are just fantastic. Shame on you for making me pick JUST one!!! :)

I agree that the whole Unicorn album is a great album and as you noticed, the bulk of "The Unicorn" album is on the Greatest Hits.

OK, I'm cheating, it's the only track I know. On a CD of my kids-but ya know, I just don't get tired of it. Hmm, guess I should check out the rest...
