I was quite surprised to see this 1991 box set at Costco today for $14.69. The 4-CD set also includes a gorgeous, 96-page, coffee table-size book. Seemed like a great piece of music history for a reasonable price. Anyone have this...?

By sheer coincidence, I was in the Barnes & Noble in NYC at 53rd & 3rd last Thursday and saw the Spectre;)Box Set @ $64.99, for real.
Wonder how Costco managed that - although I did read somewhere that ABKCO has a warehouse full of them.
(Hope they have a warehouse full of Cameo Parkway Box Sets too...I'm a patient man.)

The booklet is nice, the sound isn't so good. For $15 it's worth getting, as right now there's no other legit release of the Philles catalog.

Well, I got it, and it's a steal at $14.69. I was also very pleased with the sound quality - I don't think I've heard better versions of these recordings, but I'm curious to hear other opinion on sound quality. A great set!

I'm wondering if this was supposed to be listed as $41.69...? Or is Spector dumping these to come up with some cash for his legal issues..? ;)

As of now, you'd need to the Philles 45 rpm's to get better sound. The box is "fair," but the 45's are the only game in town for the best "Wall of Sound" experience. Even the LP's aren't as good...

Just wish the stereo version would be released on CD. Have the vinyl & was blown away to discover it had actually been mixed in stereo. Were all Spector releases mixed & stored away???

On a side-note...I work about A half mile away from Spector's "mansion on the hill" & remember the day his world came down & all the TV choppers overhead. What he is doing in Alhambra California !! ??

You can quibble about the sound, but for that price, it's a no brainer. Great music, even if it could have been mastered better.

I bought my copy used a couple of years ago, and didn't get it that cheap!

If you think the box is great (it is), you should see what was originally planned by Rhino, before Phil nixed a lot of it. It was published in an article in Goldmine about a year before the box made it out, after Phil's and Klein's customary shenanigans.

I wonder if this is just a coincidence...?

And boy, Spector in that pic looks like he's related to Elsa Lanchester in Bride Of Frankenstein! Someone flip off the mains!

The Rhino Chrismas CD is better than the one on the box set, which is the same as the common.

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

The box will do if you don't have any other references...if you have original vinyl, you won't like the box at all(or the other Spector/Abkco discs, for that matter)...hell, the reissue vinyl usually sounds better than what's heard here...:D

I have a double LP set on Warner/Spector Records called PHIL SPECTOR'S GREATEST HITS that came out in '76 or '77 ... the sound on the set is quite good.

I just closed a sale in the classifieds that had a near mint copy of The Ronettes "...presenting the fabulous Ronettes featuring Veronica" and it is, without a doubt, one of the best albums that I've EVER heard on vinyl! The tracks on the "Back To Mono" box set don't stand a chance, next to that vinyl. It's really too bad that nobody went for it?

I remember that. I was salivating about the contents and artwork they discussed. I was let down when the set hit the street, but it's essential anyway. I'd buy it all over again.

I bought the vinyl of this box when it came out. The holes were so off-center I had to redrill them to enjoy playing the thing.

I bought when it first came out. At $14.69 it's got to be a mistake, but a must have!

Have those Spector mono mixes appeared elsewhere on CD in better quality?

Yes, I just saw it the Costco in Davies, FL.

There were about 10-20 boxes. I'm guessing it was mis-priced or they are getting cleared out of a wherehouse. Maybe this set is being remastered or re-issued in a smaller size box.

  25. How does the music compare to the disc he did with Cohen?

    Thanks
