When I listen to the best of Jethro Tull these albums are my preference.

Wondering who transferred these? What source?

(Quad mixes collapsed? Which tracks?) Aqualung sounds tame.

"M.U." sounds good using a surround sound processor like B&O's ambiance system and Dolby Pro Logic II.

Made in Japan - VK 41078 DIDX 403 The Best Of Jethro Tull "M. U."
Made in England - CCD 1135 Repeat-The Best Of Jethro Tull-Vol.II-Repeat

*Also these albums have been remastered, I believe.  Sound comments?

M.U. and Repeat were reissued by Chrysalis/EMI UK a couple of years ago but never remastered. That is, it's the same transfer from the original.

Don't know why you'd even want a remaster of these. The only two tracks even worth talking about, Rainbow Blues and Glory Row, can be found on the War Child remaster.

    Cheers

I have fairly recent Japanese issues of "M.U." and "Repeat" that are remastered. I love these two "Best Ofs". I have all the other recent comps, but these two are sentimental favorites that flow very nicely IMO.

One note: On my Japanese "Repeat", "Minstrel in the Gallery" appears to be about 20 seconds shorter than on prior editions of "Repeat".

But they're not remastered. It's the same transfer as the original only released in Japan.

I respectfully disagree based on the following:

    1) My ears. I have A/B'd them.

    2) Disc and individual track lengths are different.

    3) The "Digitally Remastered 2005" that is printed in the booklets.

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

Funny thing, the only 'best of' Tull I like is LIVING IN THE PAST, and that's loaded with obscure or previously unissued material. The single-Lp/CD comps always seemed woefully inadequate to me, maybe because this really was an 'album act' and their albums hold up(the best of them, anyway)so well on their own that it's hard to listen to just one cut, which only makes me want to pull out the album and hear it all.

Or, you could listen to SH's ORIGINAL MASTERS...why settle for the above two?

"M. U. stood for Musicians Union, and the album came with a poster of almost all the members of Tull, past and present, reunited for an afternoon for the pose. The one notable absentee was Mick Abrahams, who was pointedly not invited!" - from 'Minstrels In The Gallery' a history of Jethro Tull by David Rees

    "M.U." sounds good:

I was comparing "Fat Man" on this CD and it sounds very close to the MFSL CD version.

    ... same mastering?

    - I highly recommend this CD

    Time on the remaster?

MU was my first Tull album, so it'll always have sentimental attachment, though I did dump my blue label for an original embossed with custom label and poster!

For sound, of course, I have the DCC Original Masters lp.

Don't know about you, but I'm getting a little tired of all the various, redundant Tull comps. Was it Through the Years that came out with a different cover (and possibly title) in Holland? And then there's the double The Best of. And I've already ditched the two Italian Chrysalis comps I had, though I kind of wish I'd kept them for the unique covers.

Some of the songs on "MU" seem to be collapsed quad mixes. "Aqualung" is unmistakably the same edit used on the quad lp, "Song For Jeffrey" is mixed slightly different than either "This Was" or the remix on "Living In The Past". One of the "Stand Up" songs, I think "Nothing Is Easy", comes out differently in a quad QS decoder, I don't recall which song it was. The album was announced for a quad release (but only released in stereo), and my guess is that a few songs were mixed into quad in addition to the Aqualung songs already just mixed for quad release.

I hadn't heard these comments before. Very interesting! "Song For Jeffrey" does not appear on any copy of "MU" that I ever had, though. :)

Anybody know why Anderson remixed Locomotive Breath--to make it more radio freiendly?

    Quad.

MU CD, the tracks sound the best in surround sound Logic 7. The "Aqualung" vocal IS what I notice as being different to any other CD copy of "Aqualung" that I own. Mixed differently? Sounds like a different mix here.

It's not? I seem to recall that it is. Much of my surviving vinyl is still packed up waiting for my place to someday be finished.

I remember reading that after MFSL Aqualung had been released, it was announced that the Aqualung tapes barely made it through that transfer and had become unusable (baking wasn't discovered yet?). Perhaps Locomotive Breath was remixed because it was thought to be the only way to get a good sounding version?

    Tull fans:

    M. U. Totally different echo on Ian Anderson's vocal, makes for a very clean clear vocal on "Aqualung" :)
