I'm interested in the two Tangerine Dream albums Phaedra and Rubykon, which were released on CD in the late 80's or early 90's and remastered in 1995 (using SBM).

The remasters are easily available at mid price in european stores, and the original US releases are available at CD Universe

Has anyone compared these CD versions (or the originals/remasters of other TD albums)?

I know Rubykon is also available on hybrid SACD, but it costs almost 3 times the price of the CD.

    Thanks

I've owned both and I prefer the remasters.
The older issues were rather murky and distant to me.
The remasters are much clearer and this translates well for TD's style of music.

I have both remasters and they sound very good, indeed (although I've never heard the first reissues CDs). I've also got the Rubycon SACD which also sounds fantastic (although stereo-only :sigh: ) Got it awhile ago, but don't remember paying all that much for it.

    Thanks for your answers.

Virgin SACDs are quite hard to find and pricey now:

I've compared the remaster of _Phaedra_ with the original Virgin. The remaster is hissier and superior, IMO.

I've a first issue U.S. cd, mid 80's or so. Sound surprised me as it was so close to the lp. Even has a dropout in the exact same spot as my original lp. Perfectly adequate and I've found no reason to upgrade after 20 years or so of owning this one.

Could this be a case of the (remastered) CD sounding better than the orginal vinyl?
Import Zeit wax, was pretty dreamy! Do not remenber being that blown away by U.S. pressed Phaedra, nor am I "Lost in Space" with the early CD of this title.

The U.S. Phaedra was poor. The UK vinyl was way better. Same thing with the "Sorcerer" soundtrack, which was their first and best movie score. The UK pressing absolutely killed the U.S. version.
