We have XM here at work....and Break on Through was just on. During the "she get....she get.....she get" part it actually went "she get....high, she get....high, she get...high"

    What gives?

I believe the long-censored drug reference was restored on a remastered version of their first LP.

That's the uncensored version that is currently available.

It's from the remastered edition (1999) of the first album...also featured in the "Complete Studio Recordings" boxed set. Jim originally sang the word "high" in the song but it was mixed out before release in 1967.

Thats the only version available in stores right now IIRC in every Doors studio release. The original, sadly, has been discarded.

The original, however, is very, very, easy to find used....:)

I've always remembered that section as "She get . . . she get . . . " etc. How'd the "high" get in there? [**EDIT: Never mind, I saw the answer to that above.**] I knew from various Doors-related books that the "high" had been muted originally due to the times during which it was first recorded.

Reminds me of the "edited" version of Isaac Hayes' "Theme From 'Shaft'" as heard on the radio in recent years (and included in one of Varese Sarabande's since-O.O.P. Dick Bartley compilations), with the "You're **** right" heard in a section which, on the original 45 (Enterprise ENA-9038) was strictly instrumental; and "This cat Shaft is a bad mother--" whereas the aforementioned original 45 had "This cat Shaft is a bad--"

Yeah. I just bought the "Complete Studio Recordings", & heard that, too. I personally think they should have used the version we've all been hearing for 38 years. Well, I'm only 34, but you know what I mean.

    Wow, weird!

I always thought it was strange that he never finished his thought in that song. "she get...."

    well, what? she get what?

so its been without "high" since 1967?

    thats crazy!

    thanks all!

The current s/t remaster also futzes with the mix on "The End". Go find an old version of the CD to hear the original mix. The DCC version is the best.

Well, what exactly is different about the new mix?

Well, besides Jim chanting the F-word over and over, not much. ;)

Right, just stuff that was edited out of the version we originally heard, imported from another take, most likely. Band's call on both songs, of course.

It's been without "high" since September 19th, 1966 when it was mixed.

The f***'s are from the same take. They are on the 4 track but were mixed way down on the LP.

Mixed down on the stereo mix, but quite audible on the mono.

Which mixes of "Break on Through" and "The End" were used on the S/T DCC?

Keep in mind that the current, remastered Doors s/t CD uses the same *mix* as the original stereo LP, the DCC, etc. There is only one stereo mix of the first LP. The remastered CD just has Jim's "high" and "f***'s" digitally flown in from the multitracks.

  20. I kinda wish they'd fly them out again. They've rewritten history, now that these are the only available versions of the songs on CD. The "high" version of "Break On Through" should have been a bonus track, and "The End" should have been the mono mix as part of a mono/stereo package. Just my 2 cents. :)

I say first three mono mix must be re-released as they were ... ( or we may consider actual stereo first album as a fold-up(?) of original mono mix) maybe in limited edition.

On ebay mono near mint(?) First:$200 Strange days: $350 WFTS $600

I agree, they will have to do it again sometime.
I think the mono versions of the first three lp's deserve to be heard as well
(maybe even more than the commonly available stereo versions).

The 'high', and "f**k, kill" words were not necessary after all these years,
although Ray Manzarek probably thought different.
But then, he also thinks it's necessary to bother the world with a
embarrasing reunion of what once was a supergroup.

But what I think is even more disturbing about the latest remasterings is that something with the mastering itself seems to be very very wrong.

Some time ago, I was mastering a compilation that my dad had made for himself.
The track "take it as it comes' was on it and taken from one of the pre-1999 remasters.
I decided to replace it with the newly remastered version from my box.
That is, untill I heard the difference.

The track has been digitally distorted (unintensionally ??),
whereas the old cd version certainly was not.
    It sounded really AWFUL.
Beside that, the sound is heavily limited, unlike the earlier cd & lp versions,
and doesn't do justice to what the orginal record sounded like at all.
Probably done to make it louder on the radio.

Needless to say, I kept the orginal track on the comp.

Has anybody else noticed this ?
I haven't bothered to listen to the rest of the tracks, but is this only hearable on the first album >?
