I tried searching, but I couldn't find any discussion on the version of this album that I own. It's the 1997 remaster issued as catalog #531260 on Mercury/Universal. I know that the Fillmore Concerts is not as highly regarded, but I wanted to ask the board here how the 1997 remaster compares to the 2003 Deluxe Edition? Basically, is my copy "good enough" or is there another readily available, better version of this album out there on CD or SACD hybrid?

The MFSL 2 Gold CD set is really well mastered, but I haven't heard any of the newer remasters.

My SA-CD lost resoundingly to my 70's vinyl pressing. The SA-CD sounds better than a really poor, older CD I have, but that's not saying much. All in all, I'm a bit disappointed in the Sack-Dee. I don't like the M/C mix and the stereo mix, well, mediocre comes to mind.

Some of the cognesenti seem to believe the ultimate in sound quality is the original pink label Capricorn LP. As an owner of a couple of copies, I have to say it's pretty stunning.

It's shorter, of course, than the new ones out there now. But "original vision" and killer sonics oughta count for something.

And they would be right! I have a fair few versions on vinyl and the Pink Label beats them all t pulp!

Finding a Pink label Capricorn in decent shape can be tough, the Polydor in the mid-80's in the single sleeve (2LP) doesn't sound bad either. (Digital-->) I have the MFSL, the remaster (Capricorn single CD) and they're both good, I have the SACD too, the Fillmore Concerts and the Deluxe 2CD. I tend to enjoy the MFSL, but I don't have reason to dislike the rest except the Filmore Concerts. Sound is ok, but the flow doesn't seem as cohesive as it tries to be...

  7. The Deluxe Edition 2-CD-Set is better than the single CD remaster from mid 90's.

The MFSL 2-CD-set is also clearly better than the single CD remaster from mid 90's.

I haven't directly compared the Deluxe edition to the MFSL, but I would assume the MFSL is better.

I like the Fillmore East 2-CD-version with remixes and additional tracks etc. the least.

The original 2-CD-version with no bonus tracks from Germany is said to be also quite good. I haven't done any comparisons.

I have not yet heard the SACD version. I think Dave (or someone else?) mentioned that he still prefers the 2-ch-version of the MFSL.

    AT/DK vs. George Piros

Not all pink labels. No one here has asessed the sonic merits of the one with "AT/DK" in the dead wax, such as mine. The one everybody talks about is the one mastered by George Piros.

Both of mine say "AT/GP". So who was "DK"?

    Thanks everyone for the responses.
So the 2003 Deluxe Edition is better than the 1997 remaster? Is it worth picking up the Deluxe Edition?
    You mean the Fillmore Concerts?

I had the 1997 remaster, sold it and bought the deluxe edition. I could not listen to any big difference in sound, so IMHO you would be dissapoited with the Deluxe if you are expecting a big improvement. I was. :sigh:

It's worth getting the deluxe for the bonus tracks IMO.

Basically you need a ton of versions of this album for the following reasons.

    1. MFSL - best sounding stereo mix IMO
    2. SACD- surround mix
    3. DTS CD - quad mix
    4. Deluxe Edition - bonus tracks, original mix
    5. Fillmore Concerts - bonus tracks, remixed stereo

Hmm, I think I'll hold off on the Deluxe Edition and look at buying the Live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival album, then come back to the Deluxe Edition later on.

Oh- How wrong U R! I posted a long, drawn out, blow by blow comparison of the GP vs DK pink label Fillmore pressings many moons ago, keep searching you will find it.

I have this one and have compared it to the pink label Capricorn LP. This may sound silly and believe me most of my comparisons are well founded and agree with most others but I think it is just as good (IMO) as the pink LP!! It really smokes, whoever originally mastered it must have done a direct transfer from some great tapes! It is better than the MOFI CD also and I rate it the best version all around. Certainly the later digital remasters are over compressed and cannot compare to these versions. I was actually pointed to that version from an ealier post on this site!! Seek it out, it is certainly cheaper than the MoFi and is not hard to find, well mabey.

    Here are John's earlier comments....

Just did an interesting comparison. First, my pink label Live at the Fillmore with all "DK" sides, then my pink label Fillmore with all "GP" sides that I just dropped at fair piece of change on (although quite a bit less than the Classic!!). For starters, both are in unplayed condition, truly mint in every regard. I ran both thru the VPI cleaning machine. The vinyl quality is equal for both, average, slight noise at times, but certainly not distracting. Neither of these will be mistaken for a top quality 180g pressing. Notice I said TOP quality.

The Dennis King sides are EQd to spotlight the lead vocal and add sparkle to the upper midrange, mainly the cymbal region. I would classify the DK as upfront and lively.

The George Piros sides are beautifully balanced from top to bottom. No frequeny range calls attention to itself more than any other. This gives a greater sense of fullness, smoothness, and bass foundation. I would classify the GP sides as laid back and natural.

I then did the same comparison with the Yes Album, and got the same exact results!! These guys are consistent. Lastly, the cutting level seemed similar, maybe a bit louder on the DK sides.

The opening post made mention that the Classic reissue did not sound as lively as the original pink label. I am curious to know if the "reference original" was DK or GP?

Which is probably what Tom Dowd intended.

Thanks to John and James for the info.
