The quarterback of the vintage system has been hired...

a McIntosh C-20 preamp, that has been completely gone over by Audio Classics, and has original Telefunken tubes.

Teammates will be the MC40's and MR-71 tuner...Touchdowns to be scored by vinatge EV12trxb speakers. :goodie: :goodie:

You are gonna love it!!!!!!!The phono stage is very nice and versatile. Be sure you have the owner manual with the Record settings for vintage mono record label EQ's.

yeah, I am looking Fwd to that, as I have many old London FFrr's that are not RIAA,,they sound good now, just cant imagine how good with the compensator and a mono cart....

Radioactive...I will enjoy it, and after a few weeks, will focus on some modern speakers for the Berning setup!....

I will post a pic of it all, when my MC40's return from the SPA at Dewick's...

Also, the guy selling the pre was super cool, he is a pilot for UPS flying Airbuses...he called me from San Juan, PR... :righton:

That Grado M E+ I think its called, about 80 dollars...they have another one that is about 130 bucks,,,BUT, I have been reading that one of the advantages of the mono cart (which are supposed to be thicker, or not so long) was that they wouldnt play the bottom of the groove..and i think the Grado's are almost the same size as the stereo's....

I have one now, that I just sold with an extra armwand, and i liked it, but its hard to say if its better or just emphasizing different things compared to me Dynavector 20X-H....which seems lighter on midbass and below.

    Hi,

There were 3 original versions of the C20. Only the C22 was reissued. Is your faceplate bronze or silver?

    Take care,
    Jeffrey

    Hi,

Your's is either the 2nd or 3rd version since the faceplate is silver and has the Mac name on the glass. I think your's is the 2nd version. I recall the 3rd version as having a larger faceplate.

Which version makes a sonic difference!

    Here's a pic of my 1st version......

I kept looking at the thread title saying, "What the heck is a McTubage!?!"

Please be kind to the abilities of the search engine. :)

    Hi,

Thanks..... when i first got it, i actually wondered why McIntosh didn't use the same silver color they were using on their amps. Maybe somebody else came to the same conclusion, since the 2nd & 3rd versions were silver faceplated.

Which cab model depends on which C20 version. They used two different size faceplates on the C20's. It's hard to find an original cabinet that fits a specific version well. I hadda score another C20 just to strip off the cabinet. Yeah, i'm a little over the top w/ the vintage Mac bug!

    Take care,
    Jeffrey

I think the third version has two set of Pre-outs and a pair of tape outs.

    Hi Ron,

That makes sense..... that would explain the need for the larger faceplate. :agree:

You can't beat the midrange repro on those purple Monsters. That's why I still use them in my vintage system even after all these years. After all, I could use any wire I wanted and I use that.

WHitese, your all-McIntosh system is totally spectacular; your vintage pre is especially fine. Hope it never ceases to amaze you! :righton:

    You're welcome.

I do enjoy my NOS valves, but your Macs would look rather odd with 300Bs protruding from 'em!
