Well, thanks to this forum, I decided I was missing a lot by not having a turntable so I got a Music Hall MMF-2.1 last week and now can listen to my records for the first time in over 10 years.....and I'm loving it! Found a black and yellow Parlophone Stereo Rubber Soul in my collection, and man does that sound good! Rediscovering my Beatles/Solo collection and the rest of my albums will be a lot of fun, but of course I can't resist adding more vinyl now that I hear how good it can sound. One of the first bands I need to get more vinyl of is Genesis. I just ordered the Selling England by the Pound Classic Records reissue, but before I go any farther, I'd like to get some opinions on what are the best pressings to seek out for Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Trick of the Tail. I think Lamb is very thin sounding on the remastered CD. Trick of the Tail sounds good on CD but is the MoFi or one of the other vinyl pressings better?

I thought the MFSL of Trick Of The Tail was very good*. I almost passed it up in a Boston record store. Ouch. I have an ATCO pressing of Wind & Wuthering that's great, although I haven't heard a bad pressing yet, but the Classic Records, now on sale for cheap, are very good, and hard to pass up.
How far are you from Harrisburg? Bunch of nice record stores 'round there! Hunt for mint US pressings! Lamb on Broadway sounds excellent on a US ATCO if you can find one, if not, the Classic Records sounds great. * Correction.... Last edited by Sckott; 07-17-2002 at 11:18 AM. |

Personally, before I'd buy the Classic on Lamb I would get a original Atco. They are plentyful and usually cheap $8-$10. However, IMO the best version that I've heard is an original UK pressing on Charisma. Look in the dead wax, early versions usually had a number (1,2,3) with a "U" after it.
Is it only me or are others of the opinion that Classic's rock releases over the last year only equal of the original pressings. I've picked up most of the CSN offshoots (ie. Stills, etc) and find that an original pressing sounds the same.

I've found that it all depends. Their Blue Note 45RPMs are almost always stellar. The rock reissues, unless I can't find a mint original, it's then I go to a classic recs, because I won't get burned as bad.
Yes, but original pressings, in great spape, much more desireable in my book, for many reasons. Cheaper too! |

Yeah they seem to have a knack with their Jazz reissues. I have a bunch of the 45rpm Jazz that they released (KOB,Ahum, Time Out), and they are the best that I have ever heard for those titles. They just seem to miss the boat on the rock stuff. Probably just not a good from a recording standpoint.

From time to time I still see the British (Charisma?) pressings available in used record stores. They may be worth a listen. I don't care much for the US pressings other than the Classic Recs and MoFi "Trick" re-issues.
I hope Simply Vinyl will take a crack at these. SV is not everyone's cup of tea, but their re-issue work of some British artists has been good.

Thanks for the replies. I listened to the Selling England By the Pound Classic Records pressing today. It sounded pretty good, much better than my Atlantic mid-80's "Super Saver" pressing. No surprise there. I had problems tracking More Fool Me though. The vocals in the chorus were breaking up especially in the left channel. I don't know if this is the pressing or my equipment, maybe something not set up right? Anybody else have this problem? I realize this is a long side, but I still expect it to track OK.

Yes, I heard the same thing via my turntable using an Ortofon OM30 Super which usually tracks everything I throw at it.

I don't like my MoFi Trick of the Tail one bit. I have been quite happy with the Classic reissues of all the Genesis titles so far and prefer them to my English and US pressings.

For what it's worth the EMI Anniversay series of Selling England is very good. Nice Gatefold Cover also.

I have the "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" LP-set on the import Charisma label. It sounds great! Bought it at a used record store for $5. "A Porky Prime Cut" is etched in the run-off groove area of the vinyl.

The American Atco was also a George Peckham ("PORKY") mastering. I generally found the British Charisma's to be the best sounding although pressing quality was often very poor (read noisy).

I used to have a 2 LP JPN Genesis Compilation called "The Story of Genesis". The sound quality was awesome as was the 24 pg booklet. When my brother was diagnosed with Cancer. He asked me to place this album with him in the casket when he died. Needless to say he's has some great tunes to rock too.
