Led Zeppelin Box Set

I own both the LP and CD versions of the Led Zeppelin Box Set (4CD's and 6 LP's). Both were good deals at the time of purchase but now it's time to rationalise, so the question is:

Which would you keep and why?

If the LP's are MUCH better, this may make me buy a turntable.

Firstly, ask yourself which would be easier to buy if you wanted it, the CD or the VINYL? and how much?

Personally i don't use cd as a medium at home so it is not a problem for me!

By the way is the vinyl US or European! I have the European and always wondered was the US version better. Has it got 'Sterling' in the dead wax?

With the likes of Led Zeppelin I would tend to keep both versions

I tend towards (but it's not an absolute rule) keeping original albums on vinyl and having compilations on CD. This one had me torn .

It's got Alsdorf in the deadwax so must be the European version.

I'll be listening through the 12 sides over the next week or two to check for obvious flaws but it's great hearing what people think

Ditch the vinyl.
No reason to keep both.

Now if you had the original album of each album and then the box that would be a different story.

Keep both if you're a fan. The vinyl for the pleasure of dropping the needle on the groove. Then picking it up and playing that song again. The CDs for the car/work.

Well...I gotta say, ditch the CD's. I have both, I like the vinyl a whole lot better!!! Yeah...I know they were mastered from digital tapes and all, but I still think the vinyl cooks! IMHO!

Better yet, play both, and see which one sounds better to you. That's what counts! Your ears, not our opinion.

Boxed Set cover

I saw the crop circle used on boxed set cover (near the small village of Alton Barnes in Wiltshire, UK). It got quite a lot of publicity at the time and the farmer charged visitors to walk inside the circle. Crop circles were not uncommon in that area before this one, but this was a ground breaker for complexity. Since that one they've become a lot more complex.

You can make cdr's of the CDs, but you can 't make LPs.

Dump CDs, keep LPs.

How can it? I highly doubt it sounds much different.

I'm curious to hear your comparisons.

My US LP box has "Sterling" in the deadwax.

Consider getting the Classic Records LP box. It has 200 gram versions of Zep I thru IV PLUS a 45rpm test pressing of Stairway to Heaven on a 180 gram one-sided 12 record. The 200 gram versions are a bit uneven, but IMHO the Stairway to Heaven test pressing is the best sounding Zep available.

If they sound the same or almost the same, ditch the LPs. It's not like they're rare original pressings that put the CDs to shame. I would think it'd be close enough that the LPs aren't that big of a deal.

So far I've had time to listen to Side 1 of the 1st LP. Haven't listened to the same tracks on the CD box yet. Will keep you informed of the outcome.

I'm sure there are cases where the LP sounds nicer than the CD (or vice versa) even though the source used was exactly the same. Errors of judgement in executing the mastering must sometimes happen?

Well folks, the result is in. Got to side 2 and struck some cyclical crackle. This was enough to decide me - the CD set is the the way to go.

Technical knock out?
