I am considering buying a copy of Help (Beatles 1965). There are mono versions and stereo versions. Any opinion on which is better?

And yes, buying both is an option but not desired.

    Thanks
    Randy

Are you talking US or UK? Vinyl?

If you are talking the U.S. mono, I believe it is simply a fold-down of the stereo. The U.K. mono is a unique mix.

The stereo version is a UK 1965 Stereo pressing on the black & white Parlophone EMI lable.
The mono version is US I believe on Capitol.

Yep. The UK Mono and Stereo are both awesome.

There is a Brazilian mono pressing out there as well.

UK mono and stereo are good, the mono has a different (original single version) vocal on "Help" so you may want both. Avoid USA versions, mono is a folddown, stereo has duophonic "Ticket To Ride".

It seems to me that the mono Help has less echo than the stereo thus a bit clearer. But, yeah both are great, UK that is.

Most Brazilian mono LP's are fold downs by the way.

This one is most likely no exception.

You guys are great. It looks like I may end up buying both UK versions. There are versions from all over the world...Holland, Canada, UK, Japan, Brazil...etc. It could drive one to drinking trying to figure all of this out. I suppose that is why this forum exists in the first place.

Thanks again. I will let you know how this turns out ang give my opinion after listening to both versions.

If it's a copy from 1965 (or the next few years), it should have PARLOPHONE in (relatively) big yellow letters on the labels.

Well... if the stereo version is UK and the mono version is US, they're different albums, aren't they?

Actually, that black-and-white (or silver) Parlophone-label pressing of the UK stereo Help! album is a later pressing, pressed in the 1970s.

And I do agree with the recommendations to avoid the US mono Help! LP, unless you absolutely want or need to hear the instrumentals (since except for "Ticket To Ride," which is the mono single mix, the rest of the Beatles tracks on that LP are direct fold-downs of the stereo mix).

The UK came in both mono and stereo, and the US also came in both mono and stereo. That said, they ARE different albums, because the US one has instrumentals you won't find on the UK. The UK album is the true "Help!" LP.

Not if you grew up in the US in the 60s! ;)

Just kidding! Couldn't help myself! I swear, it's just a joke!

  17. From an earlier Help! thread US version of the Beatles Help
Exactly. The mono LP version of "Ticket To Ride" is the mono version turned into a fake stereo/Duophonic version, then folded back down to a mono version. Sheeeeeesh. :shake: Sounds horrible. Could Capitol have maybe used the proper mono versions for this LP?

This is the only Beatles album where I've got both UK stereo and mono (2-box and 1982, respectively). I like the mono but both are worthwhile...
