Other forum members are always generous enough to share their CD-R mixes here, so I figured I'd do the same. Many seem to be focused on British Invasion or Soul etc., which is cool, but I never see any metal or hard rock ones and I know there's some fans of that music here on the forum. It is called - Have You Seen Me? - A Collection of One-Hit Wonders and Major Label Write-offs. I have been making this "series" for friends for a few years now and while I hadn't done one in a while, I recently cranked out volumes 5&6. It is dedicated to late 80s and early 90s hard rock and metal bands that had maybe one hit or should have at least had one hit, but didn't. Some are cheesier than others, but it is all in good fun. Many of these bands had some video play on Headbangers Ball or some regional airplay. I know I heard some of these tracks on WAAF in Boston back in the day. There is a series on Rhino, Youth Gone Wild. While I have a few of the same bands from there, I've made a conscious effort to pick different tracks than they did.

I have attached sample artwork below.

Here a few to consider for new comps-
A couple of Japanese Heavy Metal bands:
    Loudness- Crazy Nights
    EZO- Flashback Heart Attack

An ealy 90's H Ball staple:
Cycle Sluts From Hell- Wish You Were a Beer

Wow, I haven't heard that song in a long time. They used to play it a lot on a new hard rock station in NJ when I was in high school.

I think I might have picked up an EZO LP a while back. I'll have to double check. I may have some Loudness too. That Cycle Sluts track is a good song. I think the guitarist from Overkill played on it. I don't think I have that on CD. I may have it on cassette somewhere. Most of these cuts are from CD, with the occasional vinyl rip thrown in when needed. I find most of these CDs and LPs from like $1 or $2, so they are worth it for one song.

    Great stuff!!!

While I don't remember all the names, a couple tunes stand out as favorites. Little Caesar with Chain Of Fools & Don Dokken's Mirror Mirror. During my last days in pop radio, before Whitney/New Kids and so on drove me to country radio, I scheduled those two tunes in for night play. Really broke up the silliness that the rest of the music selection offered. Great feeling to be cruising town (yeah, still did that back then) and catch the other cars cranking their stereos when these came on. So sorry to hear that Little Caesar's Frank Starr passed away after an accident. Again, great stuff!

I haven't heard a lot of that stuff. That was a fun read. Thanks! I actually picked up that cd by The Poor on ebay last year, sealed for around 5 bucks.

I still think Blackout In The Red Room is one of the best hard rock albums ever.

Your next comp needs a tune from Trouble's "Manic Frustration". That's another lost classic.

What is that EVH tune Donut City? Is it any good?

Hilarious. They seem mostly to be American 'Hair metal' and 'Power metal' bands.
    You've slighted the Euro-trash metal!!!

I'm not sure if 'Black metal' and 'Death metal' are considered obscure enough, but some of the sub-genres certainly are.

    - Industrial Suicide Medicine Doom Metal
    - Pure Hellish Mesopotamian Metal
    - Ambient Funeral Doom Metal
    - Melodic Spacemetal
    - Troll Metal
    - Pagan Metal
    - Viking Metal
    - Nuclear Metal

I never got into black metal or speed metal. Metal is supposed to be fun for the most part and those generes of metal are not fun. Most of it is metal w/ Cookie Monster singing IMHO.

I can see a CD jacket designed to look like a faux Hit Parader or Circus magazine cover.

Too POPULAR!!! I really dig for these titles. I have a friend who has helped me fill in a couple gaps. He has literally every metal record ever released I think.

    Theatrical Misanthropy isn't fun? ;)
You're generally correct but there are many exceptions to be found with enough exploration. My avatar is 'Beyond The Veil' by Tristania which is of a metal genre refered to as 'Beauty & the Beast' or 'B&B' and it's a masterpiece of the genre. Violins, keyboards, chorals, beautiful soaring female vocals and duets between those female vocals and the harsh male vocals, hence the genre name. Wonderfully creative and highly musical by any standard. The last release by Dimmu Borgir had the Polish symphony orchestra on board. Aggressive it certainly was but creative and varied as well. The use of violin in the earlier work of somber 'Doom Metal' pioneers My Dying Bride was inspired and integral to the music.

BTW I personally prefer raspy to growly vocals unless we're talking about 'Dark Progressive Metal' wunderkins Opeth, a genre unto themselves. :)

    Were they that popular? Hm.

Well, I really like the idea. A lot of these bands are familiar to me but I haven't heard many of them.

  21. I remember buying Junkyard's debut back when I was in high school, when did this come out '88 or so? Anyhow, I loved it. What a great album, a slight bluesy feel and generally unlike other "hair metal" of the day. Did they ever put out a second album? It seemed they feel off the face of the earth, and back in the pre-internet days if it wasn't on MTV or featured in Circus or Hit Parader magazines you couldn't get any news on bands/releases, etc. Well, at least a high school kid couldn't. Anyhow, Junkyard's debut was one of my favorite albums of the late 80's.

  22. Faster Pussycat got heavy airplay on MTV on the Headbangers Ball, especially with their video "House Of Pain". They were a band that never made it big like other band of the era, although they were just as good as most of them, and in my opinion much better than bands like Poison, Warrant, that made it much bigger. I don't think Faster Pussycat even made it to headline status as a touring band outside of the club scene on the west coast, as late as 1990 they were opening for Motley Crue.

You should throw on a Desparado track on one of the comps. That band featured Adrian Smith & Dee Snider. The album was due on Elektra but teh band got dropped before it came out. It finall came out in the mid-90's.

Also, ASAP- Silver & Gold. Adrian's first post-Maiden project. That got some play on Headbanger's Ball.
I sold off a lot of C list metal stuff a few years ago. Sometimes I regret it.

You guys aren't kidding. My face is a little red. :o
I honestly thought you were doing a Spinal Tap type list of the lower levels of Van Halen/Twisted Sister bubble gum metal.

Apology to metalbob for accidentally crapping in his thread.
Hey I never question others' taste no matter what the music or band.
I know my metal sounds like pure vicious crap to uninitiated folks.
It's all about individual taste right.

great collections. You may want to hunt down DOUCETTE'S "Mama let him play". It's from the seventies & sounds like early Van Halen. ERA released the album for about 2 months back in the early 90's.
