You are correct sir. Why not pick up Who's Missing and Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy at the same time?

I suppose it's been pointed out before that it's impossible to search "Who's Next" in the search feature?

While we are on the subject. :sigh: I picked up a Decca LP version of this album. Would this have been released before the MCA labled version?

    Side 1: 7 12888 E1 (Block Letters)
    Side 2: M.G. 7 12889 W1-2 (Hand Written)

I know it's not the same subject. But didn't want to start a new thread. Thanks for any info on this.

The Decca records do pre-date the MCA ones. All the Deccas I have heard sound horrible.

Neither of those are the original Doug Sax Mastering Lab cut by the way, just mindless recuts, one done years after the other one. Typical Decca saving money trick.

That figures  There must have been four MCA pressings. But there was only one Decca. So I thought that the older pressing would sound better. But since I don't have an MCA pressing to compare it to. It sounds OK to me.

Don't worry, the MCA vinyl that I have heard isn't that good either.

Steve's CD is the only way to go. One of the CDs that clearly stomps the vinyl IMHO.

One thing I didn't notice until I got it home was that the Sleeve is the lighter cardboard white on the inside. Where as I think that one of the MCA's had the thicker sleeve. Isn't that usually a sign if the album is older or not? just looking at the LP itself definately looked older with that cool Decca label.

Not always. I picked up a copy of The Beatles "Abbey Road" on Capitol LP back in the late 80s. It was in the thicker cardboard cover like they used in the 60s. I think it depends where the cover is printed, not when.

And for those looking for I.D. of lacquers from Decca / MCA, please note that the "E" code (as in E1) indicates a lacquer cut in New York (or, East Coast), while "W" (West Coast) indicated a lacquer made in California (the "E" and "W" codes were started in mid-1971, during a reorganization of the MCA Records Group that saw U.S. Decca's headquarters moved from New York to California, presumably Universal City where MCA's Universal Studios subsidiary was based; it was not long after the release of the 45 of "Won't Get Fooled Again," #32846, that the perimeter print on Decca LP's and singles was changed to "Mf'r'd by Decca Records, A Division of MCA Inc., New York, U.S.A." to "M'f'd by MCA Records Inc., Calif., U.S.A.").

And whether Decca or MCA . . . the two same pressing plants (Gloversville, NY and Pickneyville, IL) were used throughout. At the time of Who's Next, a stick "1" was stamped onto the dead wax to indicate a Gloversville pressing while a "2" was Pickneyville. Being a New York boy, I'll go for the Gloversville pressings because the fonts used for their label copy, I.M.H.O., was preferable to the layout from Pickneyville copies. But as for LP's, if Columbia Record Club pressings exist with type from Columbia's Pitman, NJ plant, I'd get it in a flash (if the price is right) . . .

But be aware that the first cut of the American WHO'S NEXT (and the only one to use the master tape) was done at the Mastering Lab in Hollywood. Everything else was cut from a tape dub OF the Mastering Lab tape dub OF the master tape.
