I'm playing my copy of Sinatra's Strangers In The Night, in mono, as I type this. The first song, the title track, sounds as if it's in the wrong key. It sounds too fast. Frank's voice sounds a bit higher. Is this a known issue? Has anyone else ever noticed this?

I know it's not my turntable, I've been using it all day!

That's the way the mono version of the title song is. I actually like it that way - it probably contributed to it becoming such a big hit.

beachboydw, you have a great ear! The mono LP version of the song "Strangers in the Night" is very slightly sharp. The stereo LP version is pretty much right on standard concert pitch, A=440Hz. The mono is just a bit higher, not even a quarter step sharp. I guess I could measure how sharp with my keyboard if anyone cared.

Wonder what caused the discrepancy? It was a fairly common technique to speed up the playback of pop songs to give them an extra 'lift'. I remember Andy Kim telling me about how many of the songs he was involved with were sped up in the mix. This was his explanation for why we would perform the songs live in lower keys than the hit recording.

So was the Sinatra song consciously sped up a tiny bit in hopes of greater hit potential?

And then, the radio stations would speed up their turntables and cart machines another 10 or 15 percent. Time is money in radio and the quicker a song gets played, the sooner they can play more commercials!

If only they would speed up those damned commercials.

Was this LP tube cut? I have both mono and stereo and it sounds good. Preferring the stereo

I can't imagine it wasn't - at least the monos and the earlier/original era stereos.

You could slow it down on a Dj table like the Technics SL-1200 or Pioneer Plx-1000.

The 45 single is definitely sped up. Not sure about the mono album.

I was thankful they didn't use it in the HBO doc.
