What ever happened to that thread and did TonePub do the test?

Wow, I'd pay money to read that. Most of the Bose speakers I've heard are really, really mediocre. I have no doubt that Jeff Dorgay could write a very entertaining piece on them.

I remember, almost a life time ago, when a good friend after landing a great job bought himself a pair more than 40 years ago and McIntosh equipment to drive them. Sounded awesome way back when.

40 years later and he owns no audio equipment :(

I hope TonePub addresses not only the sound quality, but the build quality compared to specialist audiophile speakers in the $750-2500 price range. My guess is that this review will be the most read and discussed in Tone Publication history. Frankly, there is an opportunity to shed the light of truth on this situation. Lord forbid that the mainstream actually discover life beyond Bose!

TONEPUB should be careful with the wording of the disparaging comments he'll be forced to make in the Bose review. I'd hate to see him get sued.

Believe me, you will know. We'll all know. What's the record for longest Audio Hardware forum thread? This will the the gear equivalent of Beatles 2009.

They all seem to get shut down.

Music threads go on and on, twisting and meandering through the highways and byways, brickbats and bouquets flying left and right. Hardware threads are not treated with the same leniency.

Once you find that they are flat out terrible for the price (considering the competition), then I'm hopeful you'll hammer them. On the other hand....well, nah, there is no other hand.

Hm. Well, we need more shipping status commentary here. Clearly.

There is going to controversy over the Bose review no matter what. If TonePub takes it easy and grants a pass, there will be furor. If Bose is finally put in its place, then fanboys will take to the streets. I can't think of a write-up that won't lead to quite a bit of commentary. Keep in mind that this is the 2nd thread already. The first was closed just as it got going. And the review is likley months away!!

Are you going to give away the speakers after the review? Please include FaceBook haters like me in the gear contest.

In the 70s, I owned a pair of Bose 901 Series IVs. They were nice speakers. I powered them with an Onkyo amp putting out 120watts per channel.

    Wikipedia has this to say:

Bose is recognized by audio industry professionals as a litigious company. In 1981 Bose unsuccessfully sued the magazine Consumer Reports for libel. Consumer Reports reported in a review that the sound from the system that they reviewed "tended to wander about the room." Initially, the Federal District Court found that Consumer Reports "had published the false statement with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of its truth or falsity" when it changed what the original reviewer wrote about the speakers in his pre-publication draft, that the sound tended to wander "along the wall." The Court of Appeals then reversed the trial court's ruling on liability, and the United States Supreme Court affirmed in a 6–3 vote in the case Bose Corp. v. Consumers Union of United States, Inc., finding that the statement was made without actual malice, and therefore there was no libel.

I'm positive Jeff will be "fair and balanced," and couch his opinion in a way that makes it clear it's just a subjective evaluation. There's a way to write a negative review that's not an attack, and presents the facts in a reasonable way.

I've never thought Bose speakers were horrible -- more than often, it's just that you could get just as mediocre a speaker for half the price. And for a long time, the crossover design between their mail drivers and subwoofer left a big hole-in-the-middle, which I believe was documented and measured by Stereo Review in the early 1990s.

I read your publication and I don't think you will be impressed. Since I have owned a pair of Bose 301's and lived with a pair of 901's, you'll not have much good to say about the build quality. And from what I remember about the pleasing Bose sound, it is not accurate and lacks dynamic range so therefore, I can't imagine you having many good things to say about the sound either.

Why's that? I though this was an audiophile forum? I don't see any advertisers here, while over at Headfi, where there is so much advertising it's deafening, Jude lets people swat away at gear no-holds bar, completely non-biased and without editorializing. Weird.

Any consumer in a position to spend over $1,000 on a pair of speakers is capable of appreciating that there is nothing pleasant about inaccurate sound lacking in dynamics. Information is the key and perhaps this review will get it going.

It is weird. It seems that bickering over someone's taste in music is allowed, but bickering over someone's choice in audio hardware or another's understanding of how things hifi work is frowned on.

This test is something I am looking forward to!

I actually have a pair of 901 series VI that I purchased a few years ago, and I love them. They can be a bit bloomy, but also very revealing.

They create a very large sound-field. For ROCK MUSIC they sing.

Do understand that the marketing and the over-hype of the Bose name is a pet peeve around here, and so be it.

When I listened to them at the Factory Outlet Showroom in Camarillo, they sounded mediocre at best. They were being driven by a very basic Onkyo home theater amp.

I asked if I could bring in my vintage Sony STR-V55 for a test.
    They agreed and I did.

Sounded COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, and maybe it is the era, the vintage, the synergy or some set of combination factors, but with that particular amp they sound really very good.

But yes, they are Bose. But you know what? They work.

So because you've made up your mind about a given product and cannot fathom a reviewer coming to a conclusion any different than your own, you are on the consumer's side and anyone (including the reviewer) who goes into it objectively is not on the consumer's side?
