Anyone has gotten it yet? Impressions? Is there any info on who did the transfer and from what?

I have a Virgin stereo/ multi channel sacd bought during the hey day of hi-rez. Perhaps it was copied from this cd. I believe the multi channel is the quad remix.
    Hope this helps Todd.

The info for the SHM-SACD on cdjapan says:

Uses the 2011 DSD master based on UK original analog tape (subject to change).

The 'subject to change' part is funny as it has been released a week ago. It is stereo only.

  4. That original SACD with the quad mix is amazing. I'm wondering if there is really anything left sonically to squeeze out of this album...

I'll get it before the end of the week i think. A friend got it yesterday and compared to the shm-cd from 2010 ultra deluxe edition. He s totally amazed by this one.
DSD transfert seems to be the best source ( UK original master tape ).
    WIll post soon about it

    Happy Listenings

About the same amount of money, same number of channels, same playing time and same resolution as if you bought a 45 rpm LP-set :)

But here you can sit in your sofa thru the whole album, from start to stop.

    +1

    At least, it's a new transfer. Not just a dvd-a re-issue.

What happened to the Warner Japan sacd's? No new titles?

Yes, you said something there...I don't know.

A Tubular Bells review at sa-cd.net (compared the new SHM-SACD to the old SACD):

As little as I'm likely to play this, I'll probably wait for it to turn up on sale either at cdjapan or elsewhere before I spring for the "upgrade". Still, glad to know the upgrade will be worth it.

  12. The original SACD is stunning but I must admit I'm tempted.

    Back !

Well i just listened to it 2 times.
Well, compared with my old shm-cd, it s night and day; We retrieve the smooth and detail of the format, great presence and analog feeling. It s not sounding 'digital' at all.
A great work for a great album. So i'm really happy with it.
I'd like to compare with the previous SACD which i ve never heard.

For my ears and taste this one is a must have in any collection !

    Happy Listening

I've had the Japanese SACD for about ten days now. Listened to it about half a dozen times. Never heard the original SACD (and wasn't going to spend over £100 on it)

This version is amazing. Up there with Who's Next, Sticky Fingers and It's Only Rock and Roll for me, possibly better than them all, in terms of sound quality.

The imaging is a delight. Those Tubular Bells really ring. The bass is big and tight, it's just a delight.

if I have one criticism, the heavy guitar before the end 'piece' on Part One could be a little harsh. maybe it always was and I have been playing it at unsocial volume levels.

This was an album I have always struggled to love, much as I wanted to.

I must have been six or seven when I first picked up on it on my fathers turntable. The crazy vocals on side 2 used to particularly amuse me.

To my delight, by nine year old daughter came and sat with me while I was listening to it the other day. She too, without prompting, also delighted in those vocals.

    Happy days :)

An essential purchase for those SHM-SACD fans among us.

    Was wondering...dreaming...while hearing Tubular Bells

Ommadawn in shm-sacd... DSD from 2011 analog masters that would be a killer !!

Please Uni, make it happen :)

The SACD is amazing... prefer this one over the good remix/remaster on the Deluxe Edition. I never heard the original SACD, but I can't imagine the original sounds better.

The voices and instruments are clear, detailed and smooth. Very good bass playback. I don't hear any compression in this DSD transfer.

Is this from the quad remix in two channel? (25:55min, 25:47min) or the original stereo mix (25:00min,23:50min)
