This poll includes all the albums which were reached #1 in 1972 on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 Album chart.

Not all of them were released in 1972 but they were all at the #1 spot on the Billboard U.S. album chart in 1972.

Which is your favorite #1 album of 1972?

Here are the links for the other polls so far:
    1970: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=258208&highlight=

    1971: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=258498&highlight=

For albums which were #1 in overlapping years my criteria is if the album was at #1 for one week in it's original year and one week in the following year it will only be listed in it's original year of #1 status.

If an album is #1 for 5 weeks with 4 weeks in it's original year and 1 week in the following year than it will only be listed in it's original year. Now if it's the other way around with 1 week in it's original year and 4 weeks in the following year it will be listed in only in the following year.

If an album has 5 weeks or more at #1 and crosses over to a following year it must have at least 2 weeks at #1 in the following year to be listed in the following year.

If the album has 10 weeks or more at #1 and crosses into a following year than it must log at least 3 weeks at #1 in the following year to be listed in the following year.

I know it seems like a lot of criteria but just for the sake of keeping clarity in these polls I wanted to give everybody an idea of how i am figuring these polls out for albums that do cross over into a following year at #1.

  2. Heads up you put in the link to the original 1970 poll...I'd suggest putting in the link to the corrected 1970 poll with "Abbey Road" in it. Just a thought...
I think you have 15 minutes to edit & correct your post if you want to...good luck!

    Best music year ever!

I picked Catch Bull here, but Yes' Close to The Edge is easily 1972's best album.

Since I was born in '72 and I like the Stones the most out of anyone on that list I went with Exile.

Though it was my favorite at the time, Harvest is just too pot-ridden a memory to listen to now. So I chose Roberta Flack. I liked all of these albums, though, except for the Chicago album and the profoundly disappointing Exile, which was my exile from the Stones.

So many good ones.... I let Harvest edge out Exile...but I hope Honky Chateau get its due. That's a killer album.

Machine head made it to #7 in the U.S. although it did reach #1 in the UK - but this poll is on U.S. #1's.

Very clever... Big Star did indeed release an album in 1972 called #1 Record.

An amazing year for music, back in the days when popularity genuinely equalled quality. Who'd have thought a prog rock album about as British as they come would be #1 in America? Well, I voted for that, although Exile in Main Street comes a close second.

Surprised that Ziggy Stardust didn't reach no.1 though...

oh man.... what a bummer year! my favorite artist of all time is on this list with my least favorite album he ever did - couldn't even vote for him. I went for "Music" - I listen to that one from time to time.
