Upcoming release of the CD of "The Dave Clark Five: History Of The Dave Clark Five"

I was just at the Rhino Handmade site and they are advertising the "The Dave Clark Five: History Of The Dave Clark Five" CD will be available on May 15. All songs will be in mono except for two.

I wonder if this is the same CD set that I own. I bought mine a few years ago.

Sorry, my mistake. The Dave Clark Five CD is at the regular Rhino site, not the handmade site.

Same title as the one that came out a few years ago. So I'll bet it's the same.

It is the same. I believe it was a warehouse find, or over stock from Hollywood Records.

Collector's Choice has been selling this title again for awhile now.

Interestingly enough, Rhino Handmade had announced it around a year or so ago, but then had to pull it because Dave Clark objected RH's plan to individually number them.

The Rhino site lists it as available from May 15, 2001, so it's actually been out for ten months.

The Rhino site seems to be one of the few places you can get it, though.

Drat. Sure like to see those great rare LP stereo mixes come out on CD!

Ha! Funny.

But I know that Adrian was going for that Joe Meek type sound. Trouble is, most of the "Meek Stuff" was created in the mono mix stage and is now locked in the CD's. Makes my bones ache.

When they did the stereo remixes in the late 60's, they left a lot of the Meek Squash out. Ahhh, the music shines through.

Similar to the problems I have with the squashed mono CD of "Beatles For Sale". The stereo mix just sounds better, less then half the compression of the nasty ole' mono...

Oooof, that DC5 set is hard on the ears - glassy midrange makes me think Rhino-monic technicians were at work....

I have to admit, I do love the mono mixes of "Can't You See That She's Mine" and "Anyway You Want It", but I agree about a lot of the stereo stuff. I have an EMI budget Lp that has all stereo mixes. "Because", "Catch Us If You Can", and "You've Got What It Takes" sound wonderful in stereo. Do all of the Epic stereo albums(the ones that aren't rechanneled stereo) sound as crappy as that double album that came out in '71? Just wondering.

I always liked the "impact" of the DC5 mono - but I admit that the stereo mixes have better sound. The Hollywood collection is amazingly faithfull to the sound of the original singles, but listening to the disc straight through gets really grateing, really quick.

I received as a birhtday present one of those 200 disc CD changers (JVC) a few years back. I discovered that with the digital out and an outboard DAC I could get it to sound pretty good. As it wasn't my "main" player - I loaded it with oldies collections and esoterica that work well in the "shuffle mode", kind of like a house party juke box that prevents anyone from screwing with your equipment. Anyway - that DC5 disc has earned a permanent place in that player. Anytime that one of those songs gets played in that shuffle mode - it always gets a positive reaction from both me and my guests. All that compression - all pushed to the limit. They really knew how to get their singles to cut right through AM radio. I can't listen to the disc straight thru - but each track makes it's mark on it's own.

I still would like to see the stereo mixes emerge so that I could listen to them more than one song at at a time....

I heard "Because" on an oldies station awhile ago in true stereo, and that convinced me that I need to have this stuff in stereo!!!

DC5 Stereo Mixes

All,

I have the following DC5 titles in stereo: Glad All Over, Bits and Pieces, Any Way You Want It, Can't You See That She's Mine, Everybody Knows, Come Home, Because, Catch Us If You Can, Over And Over--all titles that have not been commonly available in their stereo form. All the titles are from a vinyl source. The improvement in the sound is remarkable. The sound stage opens up in the stereo mixes. The instruments are more clearly defined. There is defintely less compression and yet they still have punch.

After thinking that they will never be become available on CD in stereo, I recorded all the titles on to a CD-R for regular use out of fear that my vinyl source will wear out. The transfer sounds pretty good, considering.

I can only hope that someday Dave Clark will allow a CD release of the stereo mixes!

It's interesting that this topic should come up. I have the Hollywood verson of History and just yesterday I received a CD of GLAD ALL OVER / RETURN!. I believe the web-source listed this as a German release but the CD has no manufactuer listed and says it's for audition purposes only (hmmm). I am very familiar with the mono versions of these LPs since I had them as a kid and in the last year repurchased them. When I hit play I was a little unhappy because the sound was a little tilted to the high end (big surprise) but what really shocked me was that Glad All Over didn't sound quite right. Then it hit me these where the stereo mixes. The biggest difference I noticed is that when Mike Smith sings "it's by your side I will stay, I will stay" the echo is very strange and processed sounding. Since I have never heard the stereo LP I assume this is the way it has always sounded but it's definately different from the mono version which just seems to have a mild amount of reverb dialed in at that point. Also the stomping/drumming parts on Bits And Pieces sound extremely weak compared to the "jackhammer" of the mono. At first I was disappointed but now I want to spend more time listening and comparing the two versions. I had already burned a needle drop of both the mono LPs on one CDR for mobile listening so I can easily go back and forth between them on my CD burner. These are a couple of old favorites. I always liked those cool time-warp instrumentals Chaquita and Time (I can see the Sharks dancin' to this one) and the stereo versions actually have a little more depth to them.

All,

I cannot say from listening except the stereo version I have has deeper bass, a wider sound stage and improved dynamics with all the floor stomping punch of the Mono mix. However, your observation may be correct. I will have to cue up an A/B comparsion in the morning.

FYI, the needle-drop boots on the 7-disc Complete History collection (label is Bits & Pieces) are quite nice, and include a lot of stereo. The booklets are pretty cool, too, with tons of vintage picture sleeves and other memorabilia reproduced in very high picture quality.
