Rolling Stone has published a collector's edition which chooses the Beatles 100 greatest songs.

Their number one is "A Day in the Life." It's hard to disagree with that choice.

    No it's not.

  3. :goodie:I think it's brilliant but I'd argue for "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" --a tie

    What would you pick?

I'm not sure I'd have selected "A Day in the Life" independently, but I think it does represent the band at their best. You can say the same of many other songs of course.

Every time I hear a Beatles song, and say, "oh, that's my favorite Beatles song", the next one comes on...

That's exactly how I would feel too. Although I do have my favorites that still either have guitar riffs that I love or guitar solo's in them.

Or just the whole happiness an entire song can bring upon my being at that time period that I hear it. :righton:

What exactly is the point of such a list?

Day in the Life isnt my personal favorite, though I love it, I would say its the perfect choice for a number 1 beatles songs on a list like this. It's got Johns verse and Paukl's middle bit, and it shows how 5 years after Love Me Do they had blown open the possibilities of pop music.

still not a fan of RS the magazine thogh

I dont mind list as long as there is some intelligent commentary to go along with it

100 songs seems a bit generous?

20 songs makes more sense or even 40... but 100?

    thats almost half their discography

when you have a simple top ten list you can make a case on why 2 is better than 3.... but why would 95 be better than 94? at that point it becomes absurd

Without looking, my guess is that "Yesterday" is number 2.

I would have said Yesterday.....but technically since it's only Paul, I would have went with the first one I remember, I Want to Hold Your Hand.

You could just shuffle their 100 songs and randomly pick their numbers and do purr-dy well. I'm partial towards I Saw Her Standing There. I could care less if it's #1 or #100 or off the chart.
