The Who Reunion Live in Las Vegas
    Formats: DVD / VHS
    RELEASE DATE 3rd November 2003

The Vegas Job - The Who Reunion Concert Live in Las Vegas [Oct. 1999] is pure rock n' roll on stage with a behind-the-scenes story that reads like a Hollywood movie script. It was the time of the high-flying Internet-craze and companies were going to unusual measures to gain the attention of the public. One Internet company, Pixelon.com, claimed it invented a revolutionary method to deliver television-like images to the computer screens of anyone in the world with an Internet connection. To show off its technology, Pixelon.com rented out the entire MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada and threw a $16,000,000.00 party that included such world famous performers as Tony Bennet, Natalie Cole, KISS, Faith Hill, The Dixie Chicks, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Sugar Ray, LeAnn Rimes, Chely Wright and was headlined by the greatest rock n' roll band ever: The Who.

After the concert, to everybody's surprise, it was discovered that Pixelon.com's revolutionary technology was bogus. The concert that was supposed to have been seen by an audience of one billion around the world, had been seen only by those lucky fans in attendance and is now being made available in this unique Collector's Edition DVD for the rest of the world to enjoy.

The Vegas Job is a 90-minute concert, which features many of the greatest hits from The Who. Bonus features include interviews with Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, as well as a very entertaining 18-minute series of interviews with The Who fans.

[note: lineup included Daltrey, Townshend, Entwistle, Starkey, Bundrick]

Geez, there are getting to be more post-Keith Moon live concerts than when the Who were in their heyday...

    What's next, Who plays Branson?

    • The Who at Royal Albert Hall (in print)

So there's only one post-Moon to five Moon-era live videos in print today. The Vegas title, with the band stripped down to a five piece and Townshend all-electric for the first time since 1982, would be a great addition:thumbsup:

No, they'd have to be old and washed up to play there. Maybe in another 30 years:D

At this rate, however, it won't take long, if it hasn't already happened, for the total number of their live releases to exceed the total number of studio recordings. geez.

Looks like they really dug deep into the catalog by the look of the set list.

Not really. They did that on the Quadrophenia tour two years earlier.

Jeez guys, if you're gonna be so sarcastic, why not just skip the thread?

Thanks for posting Ere. I had not yet heard about this one. I will have to buy this but it does seem short (90 minutes?) by Who standards.

The Pixelon show was a day-long thing, with a bunch of performers. The Who were the "headliners," but even as such didn't have time for a full-on set. A shortish greatest-hits set was perfectly appropriate for this event. (Even so, it was the first time AAA had been performed in quite a long time.)

This is a notable show as it was the first time the Who had performed as a five-piece, and the first time Townshend had performed as the sole (electric) guitarist since the BMI awards in '88 and Live Aid in '85. It really was the launching point for the ensuing three years of live shows.

The whole Pixelon saga is an interesting one -- a great, enormous scam. This guy managed to convince the world he had some sort of revolutionary tech, when all he had was Windows Media Player wrapped up in a Java front-end. I remember watching clips from this show on the Pixelon site after it happened. Then it disappeared not long after that.

You're welcome. According to Matt Kent, they were scheduled to only play for 45 minutes but just kept on going. For anyone who waited nearly two decades for Townshend to pick up and play an electric guitar for a whole Who set, this gig was heaven sent!

*BTW, the Who camp's response to this DVD release so far is "no comment." Maybe Pixelon and its executors own the rights to it. In that case, maybe that means they'll get the sound right....

A quick one: I watched and listened to the audience-shot bootleg video I had of this gig last night, which I had never seen all the way through. Of course the video/audio was not great but this was really a great performance, I'd venture much better than the RAH or CFNYC gigs which are the only other late material officially available on DVD.

This official release will be a must-have for open-minded Who fans. Hopefully it will be released as R1 and a CD.

P.S. The site above insists that it will only be Region 2 but apparently at least one other UK retailer is saying it will be R1 also:confused:

An exciting release for me--my only apprehension is that Daltrey's vocals didn't get fully warmed up until the 2003 summer tour.

Thanks a bunch for posting this one, Ere. I do hope this is going to be available as a Region 1 release as well.
