I have finally gone ahead and ordered myself up a new pair of speakers. I have been meaning to 'upgrade' for nearly a year now but have been pussyfooting around. They are a pair of Tannoy Mercury MX-4M's, to replace my current pair of Tannoy Reveal monitors as my Front L/R and to be joining my pair of Tannoy Mercury MX-1M and Tannoy Mercury MX-CM center channel.

Over nearly a decade and a half of working in many different recording studios with a plethora of varied and sundry equipment, building my home studio and owning and/or auditioning so many different components and brands, I have never come across and brand of speakers that truly satisfied me like Tannoy. I use them in my studio and I use them in my 'listening room'. The Reveal have served me well for many years, first in the studio before moving them to the listening room, but it is now time to move on. I cannot wait for the arrival of the Mercury's. When I first began to upgrade my audio system for multichannel, I investigated, researched, and auditioned the Mercury's as well as the line above them, the Revolutions, before I decided on the Mercury's and purchased the MX-1M's and MX-CM with an eye on later moving to the MX-4M to replace the Reveal. I really couldn't find much of a discernible difference in sound between the Mercury's and the Revolutions to force me to put out the extra cash for the Revolutions. I really believe the Mercury's are a great value.

They should be here in under two weeks.

My speakers finally arrived this past Friday and I hooked them up immediately. They sound very good. Nice, three-dimensional sound. Solid, clear mids natural highs and good firm lows. They definitely need a few months of burning in to do though. I find that process particularly important for speakers; more so than with any other piece of gear. Now, the overhaul of my system system is complete; well, except for the Shure cart I have to get for my TT. :D

BTW, these speakers stand kind of low and I just can't get used to sound emanating from down low, so even though they are 'floor-standers' I put them on short stands, covered with squares of carpet, and brought them up to eye level and within an inch of the height of my centre speaker. I think they sound better that way too.

Well, I was kind of afraid of that. :sigh: Of course you realize we're expecting a "full review" when they're broken in. ;)

I've owned the smaller Tannoy MX3 for about two years now and I'm still extremely happy with them. They sing well with older SS gear and really shine with vintage tube amplification.
    You're gonna be a happy man! :)

Dan, are those the original Mercury line or the new Mercury 'M' line like mine?

Yes, mine is the previous line. I haven't heard the new speakers but from what I've heard the changes to the design were relatively slight. Sort of a tweak. There was also a change in manufacturing location I believe to keep the price reasonable. I'd be interested in hearing the new designs.

Well, I'm not really too familiar with the original Mercury line, so I can't point out what changes there may be. But, as you said, I'm sure the changes are somewhat minor; certainly nothing groundbreaking.

I had the original Tannoy Mercury MX-1; still regret selling those. The manufacturing location was moved from Hungary to Taiwan. Stereophile did a piece on Tannoy's plant in Taiwan a while back.

I have a pair of Mercury MX1-M's that I have been using as surrounds for nearly a year now and I love them. For such small speakers, they really extend very low down into in the frequency range. They are rated at 55Hz I believe? You gotta love Tannoy - well, at least I do.:D
