It was bound to happen . . . and I am very surprised a thread like this hasn't been started already.

I do not yet have a headphone system, but I am planning on assembling one shortly. I thought it would be fun to see what everyone else has.

Anyway, here is the system I am contemplating:

    Wavelength Proton DAC
    Burson HA-160 headphone amp
    AKG K701 'phones

Let's see some of your systems--real or imaginary! ;)

I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry depending on what type of music you listen to. They are very 'polite' headphones from what I've heard of them.

If you like vocal, acoustic, & etc. types of music, I'd say keep them and find something to compliment them if you listen to rock or classical or jazz.

These are just my opinions on the phones comparing them to others that I have also heard, your view of them might be completely different. :righton:

I have to admit that I hardly ever listen with headphones and they are gathering dust right now. In my new listening room I can listen up until late at night at moderate volume without disturbing the kids.

Like Smiley I have Naim headline - rarely used, in fact not even connected and has not been for months.

When used though, it would be with these.

Think I've posted this already elsewhere, but my headphone rig is my only rig. :)

Stax Omegas and SRM-007t tube amp.

I see your EAR is gone. How does the Stax sound in comparison?

Digging the Newton desktop pic! I have a MessagePad 130 in my closet with all the accessories (MessagePad dock, etc.). I'll probably sacrifice it to eBay someday . . .

That's pretty cool! Sometime I wish I could do that. With those awesome components in your rig, I am sure you are getting "reference quality" sound.

And of course the Ayre DAC!

I've never been more sorry to sell anything than I was to sell the EAR. :(

Happily, the O2s are nearly good enough right now to ease the heartache. And as I move up the electrostatic amp chain I think they'll eventually come out on top. The nice thing about a small-scale system like this is you can try to squeeze out that mythical last 5% and still have it be (relatively) inexpensive compared to the same pursuit on the full-size speaker side.

For a super cheap amp, damn good. It worked well with Sennheiser 650 and below. Ok with AKGs and manageable with Grado. Low impedance cans will push it to its limits, but again, at the asking price, you can't really complain.

How is that Lehmann Black Cube Linear amp? I am considering it along with the Burson HA-160 and the Graham Slee Solo.

Listening to the new Music Hall 25.2 DAC/Headphone amp and for $599, pretty darn good.

btf1980, can you give me a perspective on how the Little Dot MKIII compares with your other amps. That's what I have but want to get an idea on what I'm missing (actually I could use a better DAC first).
