What are they? How/why were they chosen to be 'Target' CDs? How are they identified in case I come across something 'in the wild'? :)

    Any insight much appreciated!!

  2. Look at the label in this post:

They are cds pressed overseas pre-1990. They have quieter, less processed
mastering in most cases. They are VERY WELL manufactured and many feel that
manufacturing plays a role in how accurately they play back the data on the disc.

Ah, OK. Thanks for the response. However the outside of the jewel case would give no indication unless you knew the item number, right? (most used cd stores have the jewel case clipped between security cases.)

Even the item number will not help in most (all?) cases. Many of them continued to be manufactured (sometimes with identical mastering) with different looking disc faces. There are those who will make a case for targets having superior/different sound, and there are also those that will make a case for targets being nothing special aside from the "cool look" they have.

Never really realized this, either. Used to have a bunch of these, but never really noticed a difference in them, sound wise, myself. I'll have to see what I still have left and recheck that some time.
