Not to derail the thread, but after having spent much quality time with Abbey Road recently, I have to say that by 1969, George clearly outshined Paul on lead guitar. You even get to hear them side by side in "The End." There's no contest.

The cat had the bloody good sense/taste to use the Rick, instead of the Hofner THOUGH Paul was using the Hofner at this part of the Beatles career. The Hofner was like a toy compared to the Rick.........

Truth, but the Hofners from that era actually weren't horrible, especially compared to the low end basses you can buy these days.

I've been playing bass for nearly 30 years and there's no question that my Rickenbacker 4003 is the best bass I've ever played. It has a very distinctive tone. McCartney's was the earlier 4001s which eventually evolved into the 4003. I've played dozens of basses over the years but none even comes close to the Rick.

Monkey the fact of the matter is that the Hofner never stayed in tune! Say what you want about Fender or Gibson (us both being Rick guys) BUT at least those basses stayed in tune! I have a 4003 too, I use Rotosounds and don't eat up the frets like on the 4001. Thing about the 4001, I had a chance in 1983 to buy a fireglo 4001 from the 60s with the checkerboard trim and horseshoe pickups for $500 bucks. Boy, do I have regrets on that one......

I recall a quote to that effect from McCartney himself -- I think in the introduction to the Recording Sessions book.

Sad story. That checkerboard binding is beautiful. I've been looking for a fireglo or black 4003 with checkerboard binding but haven't found a good enough example that carries a reasonable price yet.

He brought it to famous Mandolin Bros store in Staten Island(borough of NYC for those who don't know, which is ALMOST suburban) and they supposedly fixed it so that it wouldn't have those problems. Wonder what they did? Put a graphite rod in the neck???!!

Oh how I wish that I could play an instrument. It must be awesome to play your own cover riffs to these tunes.

I've been wanting my own JetGlo 4001C64 re-issue for years now. Get'em while they're still around. The ones I've played are *heavenly*.
