Jethro Tull-Aqualung VK 41044 DIDX 68 CD. Early Pressing...

All DARK GREY print on CD
    Digital Audio Disc Corp.
    Made In USA pressing.
    Matrix-DIDX68 41A5

OK, yes...I know this CD is missing the last 25+ seconds of Wind Up...

BUT...I have to say this CD Kills all the other CD versions out there (I have most of them!)...EXCLUDING the DCC GOLD.

all aspects are better...cymbals are crisp with attack and sustain!! clear vocals...semi-powerful drums...better bass...lots of hiss...so much more air! I'm floored with the sound of this CD compared to what I've been used to hearing throughout the years on CD...

...just wish it had the complete Wind Up.

I think that this could be the worst sounding CD ever released. Seriously.

  3. Wasn't the first pressing of this created from a safety copy?

Do you have this version...same matrix, etc?

EVERY other US SILVER CD edition sucks royally...Seriously. Miserable, dull, lifeless sound...

    not the one I have.:D

I have the DCC now. All of those 1983-1986 versions are long gone. The first CDs that made me realize that vinyl could still sound a lot better than a CD, even a crappy US LP.

I haven't been fond of any of the older Aqualung CDs until I came across this CD used...

I just re-read your post & I partially retract. I thought you meant the very first CD pressing, grey label Chrysalis, from West Germany, in 1983. From THIS series:

That one is the worst CD I have ever heard. The much later US pressing you refer to, which came out around 1988, IIRC, WAS much better, but I still didn't love it. The DCC makes all of this moot, however.

    OK, gotcha.:)

The later corrected Wind Up VK & F221044 CDs sound like garbage as well...

I think there was a recent thread about a decent sounding "lung" on Chrysalis. Maybe one of the Tull heads can chime in.

The 610 016-222 made in West Germany/Japan or the UK made CDP 32 1044 2 all have the same mastering, which sounds great to my ears. Full intro and end of "Wind Up", nice tape source, warm mastering. Not really much different from the DCC IMHO.

Sorry I don't remember in what thread, it was long time ago.

The matrix of mine is DIDX68 31. The rest is exactly the same, dark gray print and Digital Audio Disc Corp. on the ring.

The original UK release (Chrysalis CCD-1044) is definitely light in the bass (as are most versions), but sounds OK, overall.

It's mastered a bit on the quiet side, as well...

  19. I thought that I read in one of Roland's comments that this was mastered from a safety master. It beats the pants off the horrible first pressing from Germany which is the very first one I ever heard on CD (I stayed with my vinyl when I heard that one). :)

Can someone post EAC peak levels for this early U.S. DADC pressing and then for later U.S. pressings with catalog number VK 41044 or F2 41044?

Michael, you referred to the later discs as "corrected". What did you mean by that? Did you simply mean "secret remaster"?

Does the early U.S. DADC pressing really have dark gray print? The early U.S. Chrysalis discs I've seen have black print.

I have the Japan-for-U.S. pressing and a slightly later U.S. DADC pressing than the one that Michael cited. The U.S. DADC pressing is a CRC issue, and I got it in 1987. I don't recall anything special about the sound of these two early pressings. Both discs have black print. Here are the particulars for these discs:

    Japan-for-U.S.
    matrix code: "DIDX-68 11"
"CSR COMPACT DISC" repeating in the plastic ring
    Total time: 43:32

    U.S. DADC pressing
    matrix code: "DIDX-68 7"
"Made in USA - Digital Audio Disc Corp." stamped on the plastic ring
    "barcode" stamped in mirror band
    Total time: 43:27

I now see that the time on Michael's early U.S. DADC pressing is 42:57. That suggests that we have three masterings to consider when you include my two discs above. We need peak levels for the various versions. Unfortunately, I'm pressed for time and can't post peak levels right now.
