I'd like to buy an Atomic Mercury (made in USA) pressing of Moving Pictures.

Wikipedia says that early pressings "were missing the first beat of "Tom Sawyer" by mistake" something that was corrected in subsequent CD releases.

Is the USA atomic press lacking the first beat?

Is there a way to know?

    thanks.

This is one of those deals where I will still take one of the remasters, mercury or MFSL. I would take the mercury, myself. I think it has better bass response IMHO.

 That is a Mercury. Only some of the early Atomic's have the missing beat. Most don't.

IIRC, only the West Germany pressings with 01 in the matrix are missing the beat. 02 pressings and above are alright. USA pressings should certainly be safe.

My West German green-arrow 01 pressing is missing the first beat, but my West German atomic 03 pressing has it.

  7. Hi, After reading many topics recommending them on this forum, I picked up the Mercury Atomic's of "2112", "Hemisphere", "Farewell To Kings" and "Moving Pictures" for almost nothing. I found everyone of those ancient CD's to be excellent sounding. Great design on the printed side of the CD as well. My Atomic "Moving Pictures" is not missing the beat, but what I've read very few have the problem. I do not know how the MFSL sounds, but I just can not imagine it's $50 better than the Mercury Atomic I have? Anyhow I won't know as the material to me is not worth that kind of extra money.

Wasn't aware of that, but will still look for an 01 Green Arrow though :)

Same here. I'd love to find a Moving Pictures green arrow pressing. And Signals, too.

Hey Keith, I'll give you ten bucks for your crummy defective CD.

By asking amazon marketplace sellers if they actually had the atomic mercury pressing one of them told me the pressing they had for sale was the japanese edition on sony/epic. I ended up buying it trusting it'd be the right choice.

    Do somebody owns it?
I'd love to see a scan and read something about it (how it sounds, for example)

    Thanks!

Might be 03 and above. See my post #74 in the thread PlusMinus linked to. I had a disc with an 02 matrix that was missing the beat.

I've read here that it is good, but a bit louder than the slightly preferable Atomic.

That's a steal as it could easily sell for $35

Sorry to revive a 3+ year old thread, but I also have an 02 with the missing beat in Tom Sawyer. In fact, I noticed my CD also had about 3 seconds of the beginning of Red Barchetta cut off. The rest of the tracks are fine, but the first 2 with the missing beats really bother me. Should I just upgrade to the remaster?

Mercury 03 or higher matrix are complete and a vastly superior mastering.

The remaster is not an upgrade, neither is the recent 2011 deluxe. For an actual upgrade go with 03 matrix Mercury or higher , the MFSL, or the original Canadian Anthem. Try the search function there are many threads on Moving Pictures on CD.

Thanks for the heads up. I'd love to get the MFSL, but it's way too expensive nowadays. I'll check out some used record shops to find an 03 or Anthem.
