OK so admittedly I only have the first-press US Columbia CD from 1987. What is the best mastering of this album? A lot of people seem to love the 1997 US Columbia CD and also the 1990s European remaster that I think also showed up in 2007 on the "Oh By the Way" box set.

Anyway, if I was looking for a CD version to replace my 1987 Columbia CD for everyday listening, where should I be looking?

Also, please keep in mind that I'm not interested in whether or not you think this album or The Division Bell is real Floyd or faux-Floyd so if that's all you have to contribute, do us all a favor; keep your pie hole shut and spout it off in another thread. I'm only interested in mastering here. Thanks. :)

Original. I traded in my original for the remaster when it came out, then stumbled on a dirt-cheap copy (seriously - $5!) of the Japanese pressing and was amazed at how nice it sounded. The remaster doesn't sound awful, mind you - it's a very, very nice remaster, as all PF remasters seem to be - but it was a step down from the original. Then I read a thread similar to this and someone said that the original pressing and the Japanese pressing were identical.

If you take the time to tell us what equipment you are using I will take the time to give you an honest answer.

Why not try helping him out with your opinion? The equipment he listens on doesn't change the fact that he's looking for the preferred version. He'll be able to hear whether it's good or not regardless if it's on an cheap portable CD player and headphones, in a car, or a ridiculously expensive home system. This kind of elitism makes this place really embarassingly unpleasant sometimes.

If the original poster doesn't have his setup listed in his profile then Dave has a quite valid point. Our host asked us long ago to list our setup in our profile if we are to comment on the sound of cd's, vinyl, etc.

I use a 6G 160GB iPod at work and at home, I have a Yamaha receiver with a Bose surround system with speakers and a sub. I'm not an audiophile. I'm just looking for something that might sound better than the 1987 US Columbia CD since I've always felt it was a bit lacking in low and high end. A little too "muddy" for my taste.

I agree, it's one of the rules, but I don't it was necessary to do that for someone asking about the quality of a CD - he himself wasn't commenting on the sound, he was asking for someone else's opinion. Oldblue should fill in his info, but Dave could and should have given his opinion rather than taunted him like that. It wasn't necessary. A gentle reminder, and then his opinion would have sufficed.

Have no fears about your equipment. I offer my opinions all the time and if you look at my profile, I don't even list a home system because I don't listen at home aside from on my computer through headphones. I listen for hours a day in my truck to and from work, and via my Ipod and Iphone. Hearing the quality of a recording is about more than just equipment - it's about your attentiveness to detail, and I am very attentive.

Actually, the original CD has a lot of deep bass. It's not the brightest sound in the upper end, but that's typical of PF in general.

I fear that your Bose sub is doing what it typically does - exaggerates the mid-bass (because it can't actually get real low), giving you a muddy sound.

To test it out, if you have it, try "Money" from Dark Side of the Moon. About 10 seconds after the sax solo starts, there is a 30 Hz hum in the right channel that should rumble the heck out of your sub and you should feel it - if it goes that low.

Oddly, I have an Italian pressing. Only Italian in my collection in fact. Sounds great though. :agree:
