I've always thought that The Beatles were a very photogenic group. And they were almost always photographed very tastefully. But there is one shot in particular that stands out to me, and it made me decide to start this thread.

My favorite is on the back cover of "Beatles For Sale". Something about the way that their clothing seems to be just one big, black blanket. Maybe it's the world-weary look in their eyes. Just look into John's eyes in this picture. He seems to possess a wisdom beyond his 24 years, and still he has the baby face. Their hair was practically IN their eyes! And, I don't know what that is in the background (leaves?) but it compliments their coloring. Sure, it's a photo of the lads cut out and superimposed onto that background, but no matter...It's beautiful.

I can remember my father coming home one night with "The Early Beatles" LP and letting me sit with the jacket while the record played. Something about that photo transfixed me then, and does the same now...It's one time when Capitol got it right and put it on the FRONT of the cover. Too bad it was relegated to the rear of the British jacket...it kills the front photo of "Beatles For Sale", in my eyes, at least...

    Anyone else?

Ooh, good choice, man! Again, the blanket effect! Used to love to watch the Beatles spin around on the labels of the "Love Songs" LPs!

I always liked the Life magazine photo shoot done around 1969 or so, in a park I believe. There was one photo of them in particular, where they were all standing together and, John was resting his head on Paul's shoulder. According to the Beatle's timeline they were supposedly all at each others throats at that time. I guess in a way they fought much the same way as brothers fight.

The back cover of Revolver really does it for me. Those shades.....that look of "maturity", compared to the baby faces of just a few years back....it fits the music perfectly.

Maybe it's because of my own fascination with the US and particularly NYC. I choose the picture with them at the airplane ladder coming into the US for their first visit. The one with the BOAC travel bags.

To post-war UK (even in the 60s), the US was the land of plenty, of sunshine. Add to that the particular importance of the U$ market and the source of the music that started them on, and you can imagine how these poor kids from Liverpool felt at that ladder. Ah, and the girl crowds screaming.

The early foto of them on stage on the Sullivan show. In some ways, the birth of rock and roll, Sixties style.

There's this pic I have a full poster of, of the Beatles in a flowery garden. I also love the pictures in the Magical Mystery Tour album in the white suits coming down the stairs, and the one on the inside of the gatefold sleeve with John behind the white piano outside and George's psychedelic strat.

    Great subject

Did you noticed that in the Beatles Anthology book the editors used an alternate shot of George? The other three are the usual white album portraits.

  15. Another vote for the Revolver back cover. When I opened that album (my first stereo one), played it, stared at the back cover for hours, I realizd that the "boys" weren't boys anymore. I know George considered Revolver Rubber Soul Vol. 2, but I see a big difference there. To me Revolver was the beginning of serious rock music as an art form.

One of my favorite pictures of John Lennon was taken by famous photographer Jim Marshall backstage at the last Beatles' concert in San Francisco in 1966. Jim used his trusty Black Paint Leica M2 with a Leica 35mm Summilux and Kodak Tri-Ex Pan 400, no flash. People have said that John looks bored to death, but in reality he was listening intently to someone.

I always loved this one as well.

The Beatles in the Alley next to EMI's Abbey Road Studios,
July 1, 1963, just before going in to record "She Loves You".

I've stared at this picture for years. It holds all of my imagination, not because it's an amazing picture, but because it's the boys recording Revolver. They're not posing or monkeying around. They're working on some piece of magnificence.
