I know that some folks around here prefer RCA Bowie CDs to Rykos ... and in the case of the few that I have on both labels, I prefer the RCAs myself (MWStW, Low, Heroes) ... However I have heard it said that the Ryko Diamond Dogs disk is preferred over the RCA version ... Can anyone who has heard both offer any insight on this point? I'd be very interested read any thoughts on this.
I have the RCAs, the Rykos, and the Virgins of all the albums through Scary Monsters with the exception of Pin Ups. Personally I hate all the Rykos (I've never heard the AU20s though). I find them really shrill sounding. I think the RCAs are much, much better sounding. I even prefer the Virgins to the Rykos.
What about those "deluxe" Anniversary reissues - are those worth getting? I have the Ryko's and they sound fine to me...
I have the 1990 EMI (same mastering as Ryko?), the RCA Japan and the RCA Germany. The 1990 version is too bright too my liking. The RCA Germany sounds kind of muddy, especially in the low end. I say go for the RCA Japan version, it’s the best balanced one. Actually it sounds very good.
I have the EMI & The RCA Japan and it's the Japanese RCA for me, however I haven't heard the WG RCA disc though. Simon
My RCA is the Japan one as well. I've never heard the WG version, but the Japan sounds much better than the Ryko.
The "Anniversary" 2 CD set of "Diamond Dogs" from a few years ago sounded really good to me when I borrowed it from our library. I really liked it (and for what it's worth I was really into that album when it came out so I know the content well)
RCA without doubt. It's one of my fave albums ever so I afforded myself the luxury of both RCA WG and RCA Japan, and frankly I'm struggling to find any difference!
Japanese RCA for me. It has a cleaner, more solid low end, and is more natural sounding to me than the German disc. I have both but I'll part with the German copy if anyone is interested. The Ryko sounds okay to me and I've never heard any of the EMI's since nearly everyone seems to dislike them.
Just a polite reminder that when we're talking of the EMI's we mean the 1999 series which are NOT the same as the original UK EMI's of 1990/91 which some of would say were better than the STD Ryko's of the same series. Over and out.
