Tough one. Right now, I'd say "Hud".

Cool Hand Luke is awfully cool. Butch was great except for the bicycle foolishness. There are dozens of his films I've never seen. Will have to check out Hombre.

I know it's not fashionable to pick "The Sting", but the scene where Paul is playing poker on the train absolutely slays me.

His reprisal of "Fast" Eddie Felson in THE COLOR OF MONEY.

COLOR OF MONEY is one of my favorite movies, but I think it gets ignored because it's a (1) sequel starring (2) Tom Cruise, directed but not written by Martin Scorsese, meaning it's a (3) critically incorrect non-auteur production.

But the actors are sharp, the dialogue terrific, the hustling scenes priceless and the billards action a terrific subject for Scorsese's hyperactive camera. And an ending which left audiences puzzled is actually the pitch-perfect, correct ending -- in the process of corrupting his apprentice, Fast Eddie has earned a newfound grace.

  10. Depends on my mood. I love "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" but "Hud" and "Hombre" are perfect movies.

Of course then you have films like "The SIlver Chalice" a horror by any other name...

Here's one out of left field: Twilight, with Gene Hackman and James Garner.

I do like The Sting a lot though.

:agree: I love this film, probably the coolest and most intelligent western ever made.

The Hustler and Butch Cassidy come next for me.

  18. Cool Hand Luke, no doubt.

I love the "H" movie series he did in the 60's! Hud, Hombre, Harper, & The Hustler.
Saw Hombre at the theatre when it came out and it changed my life/perspective on things permanently.
Really! One of the 1st intelligent films I had seen <or remembered> up to that point. Not your average western film.

So, I have to say Hombre. :righton:

Here's a scan of the original Swedish 1-sheet poster, which I bought on Ebay 8 years ago for $15:

My favourite three films he made imo were "The Hustler" Edgar G Robinson gave the film class. "Cool Hand Luke" could be his best film ..great support cast inc...George Kennedy. Robert Altman"s"Judge Roy Bean" excellent acting from Paul Newman!

I'm tossed up between The Hustler and Cool Hand Luke. If I had to choose, I'd probably go with Cool Hand Luke, which will apparently be released as a deluxe edition on DVD and Blu-ray in September.
