    Hi,

In the spirit of the Billy Joel:The Stranger different CD masterings thread (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=146808), here's one for Bat Out Of Hell.

Recently I found my Japan for US and US for US (early DADC) to be different masterings.

Much to my surprise, although it really shouldn't be by now, the matrix numbers are nearly the same, but the EAC values are very different. The earlier Japan for US, peaks at 100% on all tracks. Compared to the early DADC, the older Japan for Japan, almost looks like a more modern "remaster" compared to an original CD. That is to say the waveforms for every track looks close to the same but the Japan for US is around 2-3db higher or so depending on the track.

If anyone has other original issue of this CD, Please post the numbers here and I'll add to the chart. Will add these 2 CD's to my future blind a/b compare pile.

Thanks Dave. is 25·8P-5074 the catalog # or the matrix?

    That's a catalog number, Rick.

Also, the "Japan for Japan" cell heading in your spreadsheet appears to be a typo.

The 25·8P which I believe is the circa 1987 Japan 2nd pressing matches the early DADC US for US. I remember picking mine up in April 1987 at the first dedicated CD only shop in my area the first week or so they were open. Possibly Epic dropped the early louder mastering sometime during or prior to 1987?

Does anyone know what the first issue of this CD was? 35·8P?

    Ricks,

I like what you did with the graphic. Makes looking at EAC charts more eye friendly.

I was always under the impression that the 25·8P was the first Japanese pressing, but it made sense an earlier pressing should exist.

I have an Austrian pressing of this title... I'll EAC it later.

I do think the 25.8P was the 1st Japan Pressing.

Makes sense. Thanks for the info.

This would then mean the Japan for US is the first pressing. From what I remember someone (KeithH??) mentioning in an old thread that it's a rather hard disc to find.

I guess this probably means the early US (and Austria for Europe) DADC mastering was used for the 25·8P since it most likely pre-dates the 1st release in Japan, although vice-versa could also be a possibility.

    Rick

P.S. Ivan, thanks for the EAC values.

The 25 8P disc is the first Japanese issue.

It's interesting to see that the peak levels for the 25 8P and early U.S. DADC discs are identical. I wonder how later U.S. pressings with catalog number EK 34974 compare. I don't recall my later U.S. pressing sounding as good as the 25 8P disc.

Is the DADC indication marked somewhere on the CD or artwork?

I am now wondering about my Bat out of Hell CD. I have a US for US pressing of this CD with the same catalog number as the OP and a similar matrix number - DIDP-020018 G3 2C 08. "Now Made in the USA" is printed on the rear artwork. TT is 46:43.

I don't have EAC because I'm on a MAC so I can't post levels, but I am guessing that my copy is a different mastering than the OP's?

Yes, that should read "Japan for USA". I have this same pressing and the EAC peak levels are also 100% on every track.

I also have a "USA for Europe" DADC pressing. The EAC peak levels match both of the above. Catalog number is: CDEPC 82419, matrix code is: DIDP 20018 11A2

I also have a "Japan for Europe" pressing, but I can't locate it at the moment :o

The earliest U.S. DADC pressing has "Made in USA - Digital Audio Disc Corp." stamped on the plastic ring. The matrix code font is the same as that found on the typical early Japanese CBS/Sony plant pressing (neat font).

I appreciate the info. on the U.S. DADC pressing for Europe of Bat Out of Hell, as I was not aware of it. There are a handful of U.S. DADC pressings for Europe that I have learned about on this forum. The only one I have is Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees.

You're welcome  I bought it from a seller in Germany. All I knew was that it was a U.S.A. pressing. Here's a scan:

Does anyone have a Japan-for-Europe pressing for throw into the mix? I have two copies, but I probably won't get to check them until Thursday.

My later U.S. pressing probably matches Brad's BMG copy, which might explain why I prefer the 25 8P disc.

button, thanks for the picture. Very cool.
