I have had the original A&M CDs since they were released. I wondered if the remasters were an improvement in sound quality or not. These two CDs give me everything I want by Cat, thus I am not interested in his individual LPs. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Dennis

If you have the original A&M "blue cover" Greatest Hits CD keep it; it's a great, flat transfer. Why screw around with anything else? I play mine all the time.

The Greatest Hits CD I have has a painting of Cat (on a flag) on the cover with a blue sky background. Volume 2 is subtitled "Footsteps In The Dark". Is the one I have the CD Steve is recommending? Dennis

He's talking about the first volume of greatest hits with the blue cover, original CD mastering (from the AM+ series).

Yeah, that's the one I have Steve. No need for me to think about the remaster. Thanks very much. Dennis

I thought a lot of people here liked the remasters...? Maybe i'm mistaken.

Really? That's a shame. You're missing out on some very good songs.

    Sun/C79
    King of Trees
    A Bad Penny
Boy with a Moon and Star on his head
    O Caritas
    Ruins
    Foreigner Suite
    Lady D'Arbanville
I Think I see the Light
    Novim's Nightmare
    Majik of Majiks
    Drywood
    Jzero
    Home

And the leftover cuts off Tea and Teaser which aren't on the Greatest Hits. All great stuff - you should reconsider.

The remasters aren't bad. They're a louder than the original CDs, of course, and they're not flat.

But the original CDs are the keepers. But I don't have too much of a problem with the remasters. Some are better than others.

I have a Greatest Hits with a different cover.

    ISLAND
    Made in Germany by Sonopress.
    Catalogue number 258 179 CID 9310

Do both CDs (A&M and the Island) share the same mastering? Thanks :)

At first I liked them. Now, I prefer the original CDs. They sound more natural to me.

I have old A&M Japan pressings of Greatest Hits, Catch Bull At Four, Buddha & The Chocolate Box & Mona Bone Jakon.

The all sound great, especially Greatest Hits & Mona Bone Jakon.

The only remaster I heard was Izitso... and did not like it at all.

Footsteps in the Dark is Cat Steven's best album IMO, and I have everything he ever released. What a great set!

I have A&M Japan pressings of Teaser and the Firecat D32Y3541 (promo copy) and Catch Bull at Four D32Y3562 and prefer the German Islands. The Japan pressings are too loud and use some compression IIRC, which really surprised me

I have both the original issues and the remasters and play both. There is nothing wrong with the remasters - they sound quite good actually. I don't think you would be disappointed with either choice. The real advantage of remastered "Greatest Hits" disc is that it gives the full version of "Peace Train" with the complete acoustic guitar outro that appeared on the "Teaser and The Firecat" album rather than the cut-off single version on the original pressing of the CD.

BTW, in addition to the two "Greatest Hits" compilations, you really should get the "Tea For The Tillerman" CD, as well. It's one of the best albums ever made. Chris Blackwell, the owner of Island Records, has described it as the perfect album. It should be reasonably priced as a brand new purchase.

I love the remasters. I thought the original cd versions of Mona Bone Jakon and Tea For The Tillerman were appalling. Having said that, my favourite disc is my MFSL gold of "Teaser & The Firecat".

I've always been thrilled with the remasters. The original versions sound, well, dare I say it, "flat".

Flat is simply NOT always a good thing... it depends much on how you're using the word.

[edit:] And did the lat three studio albums (Numbers, Izitso, and Down To Earth) ever have "original" releases other than the MFSL box? I didn't think so, but could be wrong.

  22. Regular A&M issues? yes.

    Not entirely true.

Numbers never had a regular release.

  24. I have it on A&M Sp 4555.

That's an A&M cd released in the 80's?

Isn't that the LP catalogue number?
