I've been very pleased with the albums I'm buying with Kendun in the deadwax. Is there a list of albums they did?

    Thanks. :)

That's very helpful Mike but it looks like a fraction of his work.

Maybe we could assemble a more complete list from members inventory here...?

I have around twenty thousand albums - but only four thousand were ever cataloged, and of those only a few contain pressing/mastering information.

The Allmusic credits are probably based on the CD issue booklets, where credit is sometimes given for 'mastering'. In many cases the information is incorrect, and will get more so as the different reissues overwrite one another in the Allmusic database. But it's something. Google will give you some more, and also of course a whole screenload of opinion (shortly to be joined by this thread, no doubt...)

Following one of those threads does however give Kent's date of death, June 24 this year.

I'm sure I have some Hot Tuna and more than one Airplane/Starship lp that had Kendun on it. Weird though, I was just wondering about this the other day. Good thread!

I've got quite a few Kendun-mastered 45's in my collection: a partial list includes the Jefferson Starship's first two big hits, "Miracles" and "With Your Love"; David Bowie's "Fame"; William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful for What You Got"; they alternated with Artisan Sound Recorders in mastering Disco-Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes' "Get Dancin'" (if he did own Artisan as was noted in that link, that might explain it); and there's also "Eighteen with a Bullet" by Pete Wingfield and "Angie Baby" by Helen Reddy . . . that's for starters. I'll have to pore through my collection to see what else is there.

A shame about Mr. Duncan's death, though.

Was curious about one thing though: Which of their mastering engineers had the serif writing on the dead wax?

I did a few records there that nobody has ever heard of, but I can think of at least one not mentioned.

Walter Egan - Magnet & Steel

I'm sure with time I'll remember more.

I loved the sound Johnny Golden used to get and that is why I went there. Everything I was involved with there was with Johnny.

  15. Supposedly there's a Kendun pressing of Asia's 'S/T' album, but I've yet to come across one. And I've looked at lots!!!

Doug, were your initials in the deadwax? If not, was John Golden the only one there that would inscribe his initials at Kendun?

No, I didn't have anything to do with this record. I just knew it was done at Kendun.

The records I was there for were mainly unknown records, including several San Diego KGB Homeground albums.

Btw, my name was never scribed into the records. I was generally there on behalf of the client, to let the mastering engineer do his thing, but I'd make suggestions. Often, we'd order several cuts. The first was the mastering engineer doing what he thought was best, and a second with what I thought was best, if different. Once you're in the room and setup, making a second cut is not much more money.

Then I let the clients make the choice. Usually the differences were very little, but I always tried to eliminate the accelerator limiters and the Haeco bass summers and things like that. I also did some wacky things at times like bypassing the console and using (misusing) tape eq slightly. Heck, it was free eq which was in the circuit regardless.

Sometimes the clients preferred my versions and sometimes they didn't. But I wouldn't ever call myself the mastering engineer. I was more of a laison between the client and the mastering engineer. In fact, usually the client was not present.

Of course part of my function was to select what facility and mastering engineer to use. Consequently I was involved with masterings at many different facilities including Kendun, Allen Zentz, JVC (Stan Ricker) IAM, Bernie Grundman and a few others.
