I just picked up a new Lighthouse cd-Sunny Days Again. I must say it sounds really great. I completely forgot about them till I saw this cd show up on Tuesday at my locale Tower. I bought it on impulse. If you don't know this band it is IMHO 3 parts BST and 1 part ELO. There are several killer cuts on this cd -my favorites are Pretty Lady and Sweet Lullabye. The liner notes are also interesting. It turns out this band was initially going to be the new back up band for Janis Joplin. I never new that.Anyway I highly recommend it.

Oh, the memories... The first concert I ever attended was Lighthouse with April Wine opening the bill. That would have been 1970/71. Yes, Lighthouse did have some goodies. The title track of that CD as well as One Fine Morning were my faves back then.

I know one of the engineers who worked on this re-issue cd. Any questions for him?

Hi Syd, yeah I have a couple.

Did they use no-noise or digital compression on the remaster? Did they try to obtain a smooth natural sounding analog-type sound or was it maximized to sound more modern? Thx Syd

I have this disc and this is what it says:

Original master tapes transferred to multi-track digital recorders and re-mixed at Master's Workshop
Re-mixing produced by Paul Hoffert, Ralph Cole, Skip Prokop and Bob McGuire (all four were original Lighthouse members).

Without the benefit of any other versions to compare it with I think it sounds very good!

I was at their very first concert at the Masonic Temple in Toronto circa 1968. Al Kooper was slated to appear on the bill but cancelled leaving Lighthouse to perform alone. They had some nasty things to say about Al!

The concert was like no other I had ever seen. There were 8 or 10 band members and they had a h-u-g-e exciting sound. I like Mel O's description "3 parts BST and 1 part ELO".

So, is this a "new" remaster that sounds good? Great!

I'm going to have to try to find this!

Very cool. I think that the concert that I saw in Windsor was 1970. April Wine played their new single which was Elton John's "Bad Side of the Moon." That's about the best I can do for an actual time reference. Yep, Lighthouse had a BIG sound. "One Fine Morning" had a particulary BST sound. Although, I'd actually also compare it to that great horn sound in "Vehicle" by Ides of March, too. A reformed Lighthouse played here in London about 2 years back.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Those are the same credits that are on the original release of the CD in Canada on Denon in 1989. "One Fine Morning" does sound great ..as well as all the other cuts...but these are "REMIXED" and do not sound the same as the original releases..... I was hoping this new release would have the original mixes...I quess now that won't happen. Again....this disc does sound good..very smooth and natural, so if you want Lighthouse on CD ....you won't be dissapointed...unless you remember the original mixes like I did. I would be curious if they have plans in Canada to release the original Lp's on CD in their original mixes.

I guess your memory is better than mine Joe! I rather like the new remixes (although to be perfectly honest I really don't remember what the differences are). They sound like the same songs I heard in the late 60's and 70's except they sound better. The remixes were done by the original main band members.

Joseph, You're right ..this disc does sound very good...it's just that I had the original albums and when this disc came out I thought they would have the original mixes. I know I've seen the "One fine Morning" and "Sunny Days" albums on CD as imports..I believe on Edsel..but have no idea how they sound. I guess this might be the only way to get the original mixes on CD.

Hey Joe, can you describe what the differences are with the remixes?
