I just did a search and looked through about 300 threads for the last hour looking for what are considered the best rush recordings on CD. Does anyone have any recomendations. I sold all my old Rush Cds and bought the remasters wehn I didn't know what I was doing so now I am looking for what are the best recordings of these. any help would be appreciated or links to threads that I could not find. Thanks.

Just to be clear looking for best recordings, not best songs or whatever. Just sound quality. I like pretty much every Rush CD. Also looking forward to seeing them in concert again in VA soon! :)

The MFSL releases are very nice - Subdivisions sounds great on Signals. That's the least expensive one - they're in the high teens to low twenties on eBay, so totally worth buying. 2112 and Moving Pictures are more expensive, but that's most likely because they are more popular albums. They sound great. The remasters sound alright, but the MFSL discs are king.

I got all the mofis. I thought 2112 is really harsh, on my ears, when I play it really loud and that is how I like to listen to it.

Well, I don't think so compared to the remaster. Maybe its what you're listening to it on.

me too and I can't believe how cheap the mofi is for this one. I don't understand it.

  9. Purely for sound, I always loved "A Show of Hands." Big Money is just HUGE on that one.

It's cheap because it's not as well known by casual listeners, and really there are only two singles on it - Subdivisions and New World Man - the latter receiving much less airtime than the former. I'm fine with it being cheap. It was the first MoFi disc I purchased ($13 ar Wherehouse) and I'll never sell it. More bang for the buck. I paid $65 for Moving Pictures (I had to have it). I could have bought one sealed in a longbox for $90 - I should have done that if only to sell it.

My sentiments exactly! This is why I prefer the Japan first pressing of 2112. The MFSL of 'Moving Pictures', however, is definitely the way to go :righton:

The MFSL of 'Signals' is also excellent but, as has been commented on in the past, there are some vocals missing on 'The Weapon'.

I am not a fan of live albums, so I don't really like that one.

I would take the 'Atomic' 2112 over the re-master. I found the re-master too bright on my system.

I've found I prefer these over all other masterings for the Rush catalog. Note: The original W. Germany Atomic CD's share the exact mastering of the Anthem Records Canadian 1st pressings. Sad to say, but there are no good masterings of any Rush albums post A Show Of Hands IMO.

    Rush Anthem Records ANC-1-1001
Fly By Night Anthem Records ANC-1-1002
Caress Of Steel Anthem Records ANC-1-1003

It's because vocals are missing on one of the tracks.

...which is the way the original master tape sounded. The additional vocals were an afterthought. The Weapon was originally supposed to sound like the version on the MFSL.

Barry, do you have the Japan pressing for "Permanent Waves"? How is it (and what is the catalogue number? :)

I do not Darcy. IIRC there is a 25.8P pressing (25.8P-5075)

I wish I had this one and others. The 2112 and Signals I bought recently sound nice.

You're welcome as always Bill and I hope it helps a lot of people out. I had the most horrid time finding a lot of these, but the journey was well worth the effort. I listened to a lot of not so great masterings to arrive at this list. I'm actually missing two I want, but oh well one day.

Someone posted a link to reviews of the Rush catalogue, best versions, originals v. remasters etc and it made a lot of sense to me, but can I find it? - in a word, NO, if the member who posted it could do so again that would be fantastic, thanks.
