Wow! It's an 8-track recording, but recorded live in the studio...

Well, due to the "chatter" differences iduring the break in the tune, wouldn't that mean there were SOME overdubs?

Unless it was an edit peice.

Just found this one, as I'm on a Ray Charles kick today. Such a great article, it's worthy enough to bump up. maybe a few others are "Ray"ing out at the moment.

Is there a dedicated mono mix as well as the stereo?

Two mono 45 mixes, the common one and the DJ ONLY mix. Both very different from each other.

There is also a mono LP mix of the long version that was done in 1961 and the only stereo mix, done in 1964.

There is finally a mono album version that does not fade out between sides. This is a dub of the 45 "common" version with an edit piece to keep the level up in the fade.

    Confused?

Which version was used on the original What'd I Say album from 1959?
I guess this LP was released on only in Mono?

WHAT'D I SAY LP, 1959: "mono hit version", parts joined. Mono only release. Basically a tape copy of hit mix with edit pieces.

TWIST WITH RAY CHARLES LP, 1961: Long version mixed for this album from 8 track in 1961; mono only release.

RAY CHARLES GREAT HITS ON 8 TRACK STEREO LP, 1964: Stereo long version mixed 1964. Stereo only release.

45 RPM hit version, parts one and two, faded in middle.

45 RPM DJ ONLY version, parts one and two, different stuff faded in middle.

Thanks for posting this, Martin. One niggly correction:

MacSon Trio, according to Charles himself in "Brother Ray". This is one of those little mistakes that gets printed and reprinted, and I presume stems from somebody once having read their copy out over a phone, or it being misheard during an interview.

..and it was the 'Raylettes' not 'Raeletts'.
There was also another version of the What I'd Say' which was the re-channeled version that was released on 'The Greatest Ray Charles', which was in fact just a repackaged, re-cahnneled version of 'Twist With Ray Charles'.

So are any of these rmono mixes you speak of readily available on cd by chance? I believe the version on Uh Huh is in stereo. Whats on the various Atlantic cd's? I'm sure this must be on the best of, essential, birth of the blues, etc etc. any mono full long versions on cd?

Yes, well 7 CD's + 1 DVD. Does BMG sell it? Maybe you could cash in some points if you're a member and they have it.

Well actually, according to the credits on the back of the original mono Atlantic LP "..the voices of The Raylettes back Ray Charles on What I'd Say..." and they are called the 'Raylettes' on the back of the original pressing of Ray Charles At Newport as well.
    When did the spelling change?

Anyone seen the movie "Ray"..Jamie Foxx (obviously a lot here!)... the sex controversy was mentioned more than twice in the movie, right staring in the scenes in the studio, and likewise the "radio" length controversy, too.

OK, so I hauled out all my Ray albums and it's clear that when he switched to ABC the name changed from the 'Raylettes' to the 'Raelets'. Pretty strange thing to do. One wouldn't have thought there was much point, may have been an issue with Atlantic?
But for 'What'd I Say' it was the Raylettes.:)

  25. ...and this is the best sounding "What'd I Say" I have, although I don't have any of the original 45s. It just rocks in a way the first LP doesn't, to me.
