I just bought a CD by Canned Heat called "Future Blues". It is on the Repertoire label and it’s so loud it hurts to listen to it. The wave form almost fills the screen with the "green monster". I thought this was supposed to be a good company, but if this is an example of the Remastering that they do, I would warn anyone not to buy a cd from them.
Have any of you guys had a similar experience, or better yet, have you heard this cd?

Well, Eroc is a member here, so maybe he can explain why it's so loud.

I'm all ears..... I don't usually say much about the Mastering of cds, but this one is bad. I was really looking forward to hearing this.

There is not even 1 Repertoire CD in my collection for this exact reason.

I have to come to Eroc's defense and say that his mastering on Gentle Giant's Acquiring The Taste is great!!!!

I have a bunch of Repertoire CDs and they are definitely a mixed bag. Mostly not good but often, like other collectors labels, they are the only ones to deliver the product.

A few months back the 1998 Move reissues were recommended on this very forum and sure enough they are the best sounding Move CDs I own.

I'm surprised that anyone found a remastering credit because I don't think I've ever seen one on any Repertoire CD.

    Dave,

From about 1989-1995, Repertoire did almost nothing but flat transfers if they had tape and usually decent needle drops when they didn't. A few of the best sounding CDs I have are on Repertoire. IE: Renaissance, Earth & Fire's first album, etc.

I'm in no way saying all his mastering is bad. To be honest, if I would have known he was a forum member, I would have approached this a little different.

The Canned Heat cd is awful, if you don't believe me, buy it.
I am going to check out my other cds on that label, and if they are as bad, I will get rid of them. :) :)

Sparks - 'No. 1 In Heaven' and 'Terminal Jive' are okay by me. I've been told by at least one other forum member that the Repertoire editions of 'Sparks' and 'A Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing' beat out the Castle twofer (and, presumably, the Wounded Birds).

Don't know if Eric handled any of those, though.

Eroc has improved his mastering a lot the last year. His recent stuff sounds very good!

I just found 3 Eric Burdon and The Animals cds on Repertoire in my collection:
(REPUK 1003)Winds of Change, (REPUK 1022)The Twain Shall Meet, and (REPUK 1055)Every One Of Us. Has anyone heard these?

Folks, I think Eroc is being put on the defensive in this thread. He's already explained many of his theories on mastering here yet been open minded to the way most of this forum thinks and has even *CHANGED* his style when possible to accommodate us audiophile purists out there.

Yeah, I've had Repertoire cd's since the mid-nineties and liked most of them. Then I picked up a recently made one ('05) and was surprised to see a blue blob for a wav ... no dynamics left, too bad.

Just got Eroc's Hold Your Fire by Patto, thought it was very good; also like the other Repertoire stuff I have that he's done. I do have a few Rep CDs that are a bit "hard" and forward, but they don't have his imprimatur.

I also just have Eroc´s Gentle Giant -- Acquiring The Taste, which is indeed terrific, and I´m looking forward to getting his Octopus, even though I´m not sure it´ll beat my West German Line pressing. I do recall that in other threads he has said that, like everyone in his position, he is at the mercy of people upstairs, which may have been an issue here.

But, yes, to second what Jeff said, he really has gone out of his way here to try and explain why he does things his way and has been willing to discuss opposing views. So definitely one of the Good Guys!

You guys probably have Eroc "running for the hills" after this tirade... :yikes: I'll reserve judgement until I receive the Gentle Giant "Octopus" cd he just mastered that is on the way via Amazon.....

Nah, he's come into threads here before that were a lot worse than this. I'm sure he'll have something to say next he finds time to come by.

Eroc has had to deal with a *lot* worse than this; like fighting legal battles with Universal over the rights to some of his solo albums. I'm sure this little thread with some criticism is probably pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
