Looks fabulous! But as the band say "Money can't buy me love"...

This is one heavy unit. I almost broke my back while carrying it up to my apartment. It also looks very, very cool. When I'd set it up, I pressed OPEN and the CD tray quietly slid out. Immaculate quality and engineering. So far so good! I was 100% satisfed at this point.

But then I put in a CD and pressed play and... it became very obvious that this is not exactly a quiet machine once there is a a CD inside it! Before the music starts playing, the Yamaha spins the disc (I guess it's checking what kind of disc it is) and there is a high-pitched sound coming from it. I can accept that. But the thing is, the sound never stops, it just becomes a bit lower. If you turn off the volume you can easily hear the CD spinning even if you're seated in a sofa across the room.

I'm disappointed. My good ol' JVC CD player from 1991 is totally silent while music is playing. Even if you place your ear 1 mm from it you can't hear anything. Not a sound. That this Yamaha player, which is about five times as expensive, can't be as quiet is ridiculous.

Is this some new modern development that I have missed?

Do all new, quality CD players sound like weeping babies while playing music?

If that's the case I'm sticking to vinyl and second-hand CD players from the '90s in the future!

As for sound quality... well, I don't know what to say. I have both the Yamaha and the JVC hooked up to my Luxman now. I have made A / B comparisons and blind tests for about two days and it's very difficult to tell them apart. I have listened through the speakers and I have listened through my Denon AH-D2000 headphones. No matter how I try I can't tell which one sounds better. So either my old CD player is much better than I've given him credit for or the Yamaha is overrated.

Conclusion? I'm sendin' it back first thing tomorrow.

Still looks good though...

Jerry Garica, Jr

that's sad to hear. perhaps it is a defective example?
perhaps you should try exchanging it for another before
giving up on it. if you are going to be looking for another
vintage CDP, i can recommend this:

PIONEER PD-91 REFERENCE CD PLAYER (1988)

my personal example of this remarkable CDP is of it's japanese
market variant, the 1987 PIONEER PD-3000:

now, please be aware that the U.S. PD-91 shows up on EBAY but
once/twice a year on average, and the superior JPN market 3000
is generally only ever available in the U.S. via WWW.RINKYA.COM ,
a middle man for westerners to bid on the YAHOO JAPAN auction site...
