if these were DVD-A's, i'd be all for them. because i can play them without buying anything new and i would be able to rip the audio for a joyful car ride.

I'm really kind of surprised by this thread! People on this forum have been whining for years about the demise of the high-res SACD and DVD-Audio formats. The reason for their lack of success is obvious: high-res audio by itself is not a sufficient reason for people to buy a new technology.

Now here comes Blu-ray with high-res audio, high-res video, and enhanced interactivity and network connectivity. That's hopefully enough of a feature set to get people other than audiophiles interested in a high-res audio format, especially since it's being including in game consoles. Yes, the price is high, but Blu-ray just won the format war with HD-DVD. Wait a year or two and prices will be at a reasonable level.

Neil's announcement seems like a great thing to revive the prospect of having a high-res digital audio format that actually wins widespread consumer acceptance, though the consumer acceptance may come because of other features of the format. It's not for everybody, sure, and I understand some of the disappointment if all you're thinking about is Neil's Archives. But I expected to see a lot more enthusiasm for it on this forum based on its implications for high-res audio in the future than all the negativity being expressed here.

I don't have a Blu-ray player yet either, but I'm going to start investigating that now!

They should remake the Beatles Anthology as a Blu-Ray set and we'll see what happens then!

It is a 1.33 aspect ratio which really sucks on a 1.85 screen.

The PS3 is different than a Wii in that there is a very significant percentage of people that bought a PS3 that were not even particularly interested in video games but rather blu ray playback. In other words, a significant percentage of the 3.5 million were videophiles vs. gamers and I think the videophile crowd might be in Neil's target with this groundbreaking release.

FWIW, I'm picking this up day one (assuming I have a PS3 by then) AND I currently can't get enough GTAIV. (I understand I'm in the minority.)

Ignore it - it's green

My Neil Young rant for HDCD – in the spirit of what Neil claims to be…

Dear Neil,

In these green days I like to turn off the TV & give the eyes and the planet a rest.
Release your music without the video and make your green stance a believable word.

Mother Nature on the run from Neil Young.

too Young

If I get the PS3, then I will get the Neil Young Archives, but I have the Xbox 360 and don't plan to go out of my way to acquire new media technology. I was disappointed that the Archives didn't come out on CD because I would have bought that right away.
For the record, I am someone who enjoys Grand Theft Auto 4 and also has been looking forward to the Neil Young Archives.

"Young said the archives will be released chronologically and include some previously unreleased songs, videos, handwritten manuscripts and other memorabilia, in addition to the high-resolution audio that Blu-ray technology is known for.

Fans can download more content like songs, photos and tour information directly to the Blu-ray discs as the content becomes available."

What's this all about? Are Blu-ray discs rewritable?

There are recordable and re-writable discs, but the article is worded wrong. They are referring to the capability of discs' interaction with Profile 2.0 players (i.e. Playstation3) to access the internet and download specific content to be stored in the player's non-volatile memory.

Thanks for explaining this. I too was confused by the description of player capabilities, as I do not (yet) own a blu-ray player.

I don't see why there's much grousing here. I mean, Young's opinions of CD technology have been on the record for a long time, as has his desire to see digital technology catch up with what he sees as the positive qualities of analog. Now we're apparently there. Whoopee.

I'd hate for them to do to the old 4x3 Beatles footage what they did to "A Hard Day's Night" to make it "letterboxed" for that Mirimax DVD...

How may times can we be duped? Not only is it obscene to have to buy a Blue Ray player to taste the fruits of Neil's 20 year "labour of love" essential collection (with lots of repeats) but, why would I buy another video system, when DVD is fine (REALLY!!!) and all the Blue Ray discs I ses on sale at Best Buy cost $30 buck each... even if Blue Ray players come down to $100 bucks, (I doubt it)... are we all gonna shovel out 30 bucks a pop for each new blue ray disc, and buy them "old DVD" again? (The Last Waltz, TSRTS?) It just gets beyond ridiculous... And, lets not forget "planned 0bsolesence"... all of this will change within five years... I WILL NOT buy Archives on Blue Ray
NEVER, no way, I swear...I'll support Neils' vinyl and cds releases only. I want to HEAR his music, not watch him rewrite music history to his tastes/ego...

But that's me, to each his own, I'm all Neiled out, onwards&upwards...

cheers,

Im not certain of this, but I understand Blu-Ray discs give the capacity to add a frame around footage. By that I mean you could keep the full 4x3 ratio but rather than having a black screen either side of it you could fill that with either the equivalent of a screensaver or other footage designed to make it a more pleasant viewing experience. That way you wouldnt lose anything in keeping it in 4x3. Could be cool

FWIW Im sure that Blu-Ray discs will also come down in price. If I remember correctly both CD and DVD were very expensive when they first started out, but now of course theyre relatively cheap. Im sure the same thing will happen with the BR discs.
