Marston has 2 piano rolls in the set, but in the notes says that they did a poor job of presenting his art.

I bought this to hear In The South conducted by Constantin Silvestri, which is reputed to be one of the best versions. It has pretty good sound from 1967, engineer Stuart Eltham. The rest of disc 1 is Elgar's Symphony No. 1 conducted by Barbirolli , Philharmonia Orchestra, engineer Harold Davidson, 1962. This has even better sound, just wonderful.

    From a series, British Composers
Elgar: Symphonies 1 & 2; In The South; Serenade for Strings.
    Barbirolli; Silvestri; Del Mar.

Several hours of bliss today listening to the Pablo Casals Original Jacket Collection. I somehow overlooked this one and just recently bought it for $23.95 delivered from Amazon Marketplace (Import Cds). I just checked and it's still available at that price. You get ten cd's of live Casals performances. Nine are from the Prades/Perpignan festivals in the early 50's. The tenth disc is a 1961 white house performance. All are mono but sound better than any Casals that I can think of.

It's quite a set of performances. Complete Beethoven Cello Sonatas and more with Rudolf Serkin. Piano Trios w/Istomin & Schneider and Hess and Stern. Schumann Concerto with Ormandy etc. The Prades Festival boxes on the Music & Arts label have been a long time favorite.

    Mono

Now playing a minty-looks-untouched mono white label promo of Bernstein's 1964 Mahler 2 with NYPO [Columbia M2L 295]. Any of our resident LP experts know if this is a dedicated mono mix or a fold-down? Released October 1964.

I doubt they were doing dedicated mono mixes for classical releases in 1964

most likely from that period the original was stereo. Few mono classical recordings carried on much past 1960

Hello everybody - new lurker here .

Despite the fact I probably have hundreds of mono LPs, I'd never stopped to engage my brain and consider they might not be true mono recordings - which as kind of dumb as I am well aware many recordings were available in both m and s. My question - is there any essential difference between the two above. I assume the dedicated mix is multiple microphones mixed into one channel, the second, two channels mixed to one - so in the end, does it really matter?

IMO, it often doesn't. Single-microphone mono recordings from the '50s often do have a purity and clarity that is unmatched by mix-down monos. But once you get to recordings of the mid- to late-'50s made with three or (eventually many more) more microphones, both the stereo and mono versions of the resultant album are mix-downs of multi-track tapes.

Anyone heard of this pianist? I'd have thought Google would have returned more hits; there isn't even a Wikipedia article on her.

    More about her here:

All the pieces are wonderful, but the main highlights for me are the unjustly rarely heard delightful Venezia e Napoli and particularly the Ballade, which is easily as good as any of Chopin's - dark, brooding, lyrical, visionary with a triumphant but ultimately peaceful close - the quintessence of Liszt's piano music at its finest.
