You edit the cue file on a text editor and add FLAGS PRE. Something like:

    TRACK 01 AUDIO
    TITLE "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'"
    PERFORMER "Michael Jackson"
    FLAGS PRE
    INDEX 01 00:00:00

and so on for every track

Philips CDR765. Bottom sticker says Model CDR765 BK02.

But why don't you PM me, Don, and give me your email address, so I can send you a few 30-second samples of before and after de-emphasis with the various methods I listed. There's no point in you spending a lot of money on a deck if it doesn't sound like what you want. You may not agree that it sounds better.

Right, Sam. Insert the CD, click "Action" then click "Copy Image & Create Cue Sheet." This will rip wavs and also create the cue sheet alfeizar showed an example of above.

When done, open the cue sheet in Notepad or the like (it's a text document). If it does not list "FLAGS PRE" above the Index line for each song, type it in manually for each song, as alfeizar showed above. Then close the cue sheet and save it when it asks if you want to save. Be sure to take note of where on your computer it is located, as you will be using it late. (Should be in the same spot the WAVs you just ripped are.)

You will find EAC will have ripped the album as one long file, not broken up into individual songs. That's what the cue sheet is for. So to burn it to CD, click Tools, then Write CD-R. The CD Layout Editor box will pop up. In that, click File, then click Load Cue Sheet. Select the cue sheet you just created, and click "Open." The cue sheet will load, showing the individual songs listed. Now click "CD-R" at the top of the screen and click "Write."

The disc will be broken down into individual tracks on the finished CD-R, now with a pre-emphasis flag on the songs which should be recognized by iTunes and other programs that recognize them. (As long as you made sure the cue sheet says FLAGS PRE above the index line for each song.)

Huh. For my DSotM Harvest Black Face, I just used WaveEmph, but I'll give it a try with EAC when I get the chance and see if there's any differences in the sound.

Foobar, the Convolver Plugin and a suitable impulseresponse-File give you all you need to do perfect DE... works like a charm

I have compared the De-Emph sound of Foobar, SoX, WaveEmph and my mastering software Izotope Ozone and prefered the latter. It had a richer sound. The other methods sounded like one applied a filter on top of the music.
Of course the other methods are free and work well. I thought the sound of SoX was the best.

Unfortunately I don't have a CD player capable of De-Emph, so I can't compare the difference between software and hardware DE.

By the way, I do want to add a title to the pre-emphasis list:

West Side Story - Original Sound Track, Japan, 35DP 59 CBS/SONY

I documented my process for doing de-emphasis on a rip in this head-fi thread: Ripping CDs that have pre-emphasis. In hindsight, I should have posted that here rather than head-fi since people here actually care about pre-emphasis and de-emphasis. C'est la vie.

I rip to a CUE with EAC then do de-emphasis with SoX then split the CUE using Foobar or CUETools. At the time I compared the de-emphasis done by iTunes 8 against SoX and found the SoX version to sound better. I don't know if iTunes has gotten better since then or not. I never tried WaveEmph or any other options. If I find another (free) software solution that works better then I'll switch. SoX did well enough to my ears.

    Thanks for this pointer...

just compared DE done by SoX and done via Foobar+Convoler+impulse-response: In some cases a very very small difference can be heard between the Sox and the Convolver-appoach: Sox sounds slightly better, very slightly ;-)

But IMHO one can live very well with both methods, even compared to hardware-DE... But i admit: never tried izotope...

Question: Can anybody confirm if the Boston Don't Look back 35-8P mastering truly does have pre-emphasis? My EAC won't detect it in the sub code so I can't be sure. It comes up as NOT having pre-emphasis but that could be just coming from a TOC reading. I put the .wav files through SOX and they sorta sound muddy now. <shrugs> I was always under the impression that this disc did in fact have pre-emphasis but now I'm not sure.

    Anybody?

  14. My original Epic CD of Ricky Skaggs' "Highways and Heartaches" has it. It's stored so I don't have any of the other info available at the moment. Sorry if this has been mentioned, but if so I didn't see it.

    This was unexpected:

    • Various Artists: Razormaid! Compact Disc Series "r-1" (Razormaid! Records RM-CD-r1; US 1989[?])
It's an anomaly -- "a-2" and "z-3" don't have it, nor do any of the other Razormaid! CDs I have from that period.

    I've updated the release list.

Can someone remind me where/how I add the pre-emphasis flag. I have not done it in some time but remember doing "flag pre" or something but don't remember exactly where. I got the Bruce Springsteen Born To Run Japan for US which I understand has pre-emphasis and want to make a proper CD-R of it.
    Thanks

I discovered (the hard way) a bug in 10.5 and 10.5.1 iTunes that creates unlistenable distortion when you play or import a CD with pre-emphasis. I was importing Men at Work's "Cargo" CK38660 U.S. Vers.

    Fixed now in 10.5.2

Picked up today: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Southern Accents, MCAD-5486/DIDX-383, stated US-for-US w/no barcode and a stamped (JVC?) matrix code. PRE flag is missing from the TOC but present in the program area. I've added it to the release list.

For what it's worth, I'm always looking for any missing info on releases that are already in the list, particularly things like matrix codes and whether or not the TOC and program area flags differ. You can post it here or message me directly.
