I assume the Sgt Peppers and White MONO's. What else is a must have to complete a nice collection?

The White Album mono is on Apple, not Parlophone.

    Short answer: All of them.

    Long Answer:
    Beatles for Sale (stereo)
    Rubber Soul
    Revolver
    Sgt. Pepper (Mono)

Please, Please Me sounds better on Die Beatles
With the Beatles you want the Canadian Beatlemania:With The Beatles
A Hard Days Night I'm not sure what pressing is best. I have the y/b Parlophone so I never looked any further.

    Quick way: The BC13 box.

Long way: the HorZu PPM and MMT, original Y/B Parlophones. And umm... it may take you a while.

Quick reminder - Keep FAR away from the MFSL MMT. Boy, does it sucksucksucksuck.

They're all essential! But it's true that "Die Beatles" and the German Horzu "Magical Mystery Tour" kick some serious butt!

I would only say that it does suck, as opposed to sucksucksucksuck. It isn't that bad. think the best MoFi is "Abbey Road" but I digress.

Oh, boy, I disagree. It IS that bad.

    Try and follow this.

    Beatles record MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR.
Stereo mix made for Parlophone EP, first generation.
Stereo mix copied for Capitol, USA
Stereo dub arrives at Capitol, USA, instantly redubbed again with Capitol "EQ".
Songs for side two for the Capitol LP dubbed from whatever Capitol had lying around at the time, mainly mono made into FAKE STEREO.

YEARS GO BY and EMI, UK decides to release the same MMT LP as USA Capitol released. Instead of recompiling the songs FROM THE MASTER TAPES IN THEIR OWN ABBEY ROAD TAPE LIBRARY THEY REQUEST DUB TAPES FROM US CAPITOL!!!!! Why?

    So:

Capitol pulls third generation tape of MMT stereo, dupes it to a fourth generation dub tape and sends the dupe to EMI, UK including the bad fake stereo on side two.

EMI marks this as MMT STEREO LP MASTER in Abbey Road tape vault. Can you believe that crazy s**t?

Years go by and MoFi is doing the Beatles stuff on LP, they use, you guessed it, the dub of a dub of a dub of a dub of a dub that EMI has marked master, including the fake stereo.

Why even bother to put the MoFi MMT on your turntable, man?

Steve, you forgot to add that you told MoFi not to use this ridiculous tape, but they went ahead and used it anyway. :shake:

That is a lineage from Hell...

Is the CD version of the stereo MMT EP part of all this? Or is it the original stereo Parlophone tape?

    Beatles For Sale - Stereo
    Rubber Soul - Mono
Revolver - both Mono and Stereo

A Hard Days Night and Help in Stereo are also recommended

As others have mentioned, you want Die Beatles (-2) over PPM and Beatlemania (narrow run out area) over WTB.

Makes a great turntable mat ;)

Wow! I neverb realized that the MoFi MMT had THAT many layers of suck heaped upon. Sckott may have missed a suck or two in his post! :)

In defense of the MoFi MMT, it did sound better than my beat up hand me down Capitol LP that I owned. ;)

Yeah, I tried my darndest to get stop them from using that tape. Hell, even the Capitol dub tape stored in LA would have been three generations better. So wacky.

Both CD versions use the original stereo master mixes. The EP box sounds a bit better to me and also includes the MONO mixes.

Did MoFi have to use that tape bacause it EMI insist that MoFi use the tape that EMI supplied, or were they just being too lazy to track down the tape at Capitol in LA?

That's what I thought. I like the EP CD versions of MMT and the set as a whole. It has its share of favorable reviews here.

They just wanted the project out to make some money. The company at that time had:

    Record execs.

    Stan Ricker, engineer

    Sales dudes.

    No historian.

Poor Stan, he wasn't expected to know, he just mastered what was put in front of him. Not his fault.

My second to last "TELEX" to the MoFi exces was:

YOU'RE MAKING A BIG, BIG, MISTAKE! PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!!!

Their telex back to me was:

"But it's marked MASTER" and it came from Abbey Road".

My last telex to the MoFi execs was:

"Just LISTEN to it; you can tell it's not the master, side two has FAKE STEREO on it. That's not an original tape".

    Their last telex to me:

"Project completed, thanks for your concern."

Oh well, I tried. I mean, I really tried. They just wouldn't believe me when I told them that there was no stereo LP master in England for MMT and they would have to actually assemble one from the master mixes.

So the German MMT on Apple/EMI/Electrola C 062-04-449 is the only time this title was mastered to LP using the correct tape in analog?

I lucked out and picked up one in Stone Mint Condition (looks unplayed) with a slightly water damaged cover for $6.99 at Aron's. And it is the thick pressing with two sets of matrix numbers, so it is the real one.

Well my opinion is if there was one thing they didn't do too well, that was listen. Having a good process is not enough. They sure wouldn't believe me when I complained about the 120 cycle noise.

They don't have to believe a word you say if they would just use their ears. Go figure.

STEVE: I've always forgotten to ask you, What happened to
    EMI's ORIGINAL MASTER of MMT?
Why didn't they just use their own stuff instead
    of all the Capitol dubs?
Please don't tell me they're THAT STUPID?

    Randy,

Are you referring to the Mono or Stereo "Beatlemania" as being better than its counterpart UK WTB?

    Thanks.

I'm not Randy, but the version you want is the stereo, with the shorter run out groove. Nice wide stereo on this issue. Relatively cheap and easyto find on e-bay. It'll probably go nuts like the "Die Beatles" someday soon though!

    Thanks for the info Steve!

A shame MoFi didn't do it right. Talk about a wasted opportunity.
