Can't help with either of those, I'm afraid, but both the MFSL CD and LP are very good. MFSL did a pretty slick job with every Elton title they touched, IMO.

Of course, once Steve got his mitts on Madman and Greatest Hits, he kinda set the bar for those titles, but that doesn't really apply to GYBR, I suppose.

Great title. Get it on something for sure. :)

It's very close. Since I heard the SACD first, and was blown away, the DVD-A seemed less of a surprise.

If I only could get one, for listening, I would have to agree, SACD.

I've compared the SACD, the MFSL (UD1), the USA "made in Japan" MCA CD, and the corresponding tracks from the SH Greatest Hits. I don't really like any of them, I'm afraid...they're all too dull for my taste, except for the MCA Japan CD, which varies from being "just a bit" to WAY too bright.

MFSL Ultradisc sounds the most natural to me. I have compared it to the SACD and the newest Rocket remaster.

Someone help me like the SACD version  Is it supposed to sound this "bright"?

Well, I have the DVD-Audio version and I also find it a little too bright and, probably, some 4 decibels or so louder than all my other SACDs and DVD-As. Have any of you notice this?

Compared to the "Tumbleweed Connection" MF Ultradisc (OK, I know it's not the same record) I prefer the sound of the DVD-Audio. The Ultradisc, although better-sounding than other CDs sounds flatter than the DVD-A, again, at least on my player.

IMO a lot of the GYBR versions on CD have peaks (of varying intensity) at about 4k and 7k...and are somewhat lacking in the extreme top end. I think this is what you are hearing on the SACD. It isn't so much a brightness as it is a "peaky" harshness - in the treble region.

The UD1 has its moments (Candle In The Wind is very nice), but some tracks are quite dull, such as Funeral For A Friend. I didn't really appreciate this until I compared with the MCA Japan CD and heard all sorts of detail that is MIA on the UD1...but the Japan CD certainly has the aforementioned peaks. If you get rid of those peaks (which do vary from track to track), the Japan CD has the better overall tonality IMO.

The reason I am so familiar with these peaks is that I just finished my own remaster of GYBR, using tracks from the UD1 and the MCA Japan CD.

The Mo-Fi is to me the best sounding version of ROAD. It'll be buried with me.

Well, it seems Elton John was blown away when he heard the multi tracks. I'm guessing the SACD is his favorite.

The latter. The MFSL UD(I) is my pick.

Not heard the SACD .. Out of the remaster, DJM and Mofi, it's DJM for me all the way for this particular title. Doesn't answer your question I guess.

I'm with snowman and 22dRow. The DJM is the best for me only because of the midrange suck-out on the MFSL otherwise that would be my choice.

The MFSL UDI is my favorite version on CD, though the West German DJM and Japanese MCA pressings come close. The SACD gives the most three-dimensional sound, but I concur with others here in that it is a bit bright in spots. Overall, I listen to the MFSL UDI disc most often. I haven't gotten the DVD-Audio set yet.

I have not heard the MFSL, SACD or DVD-A, but I'm very content with my original DJM and MCA CDs, which both share the same mastering.

I have the SACD of that one and I think it's strength is the multi-channel mix which is very good :edthumbs: (if you're a fan of multi-channel ). Brightness didn't seem to jump out at me in the stero mix, but I also have the MoFi and it does sound amazing. Steve would probably have the best handle on faithfulness to the original source so if that's what you're looking for the MoFi would likely be it. The SACD is a very nice package overall, though, and I don't think the sound would disappoint you. Would LOVE to hear the DVD-A to compare!

    DVD-A.
I've only heard the title cut in SACD and it seems brighter that the DVD-A which sounds fantastic. Love the multi-channel mix. I also own the gold MFSL which is also fantastic.

Leave the Mofi behind for the living to enjoy and take a CD-R copy instead...I don't think you'll notice any difference. :)

  24. There is a thread here somewhere relating to the SA-CD. FWIW, there are some tracks that sound very bright to me (the opener, Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, for example). But other tracks sound fine. I think I posted in the other thread that disc 2 of the SACD sounds much smoother than disc 1. Perhaps a hallucination, but I think I few others posted similar findings.

As for the MC mix, I am OK with that...to my ears, it is very enveloping without being gimmicky.

I have the MFSL LP and the new SACD. On my system, IMHO, the SACD is very good. It is not as good as the MFSL, but when I want to here the music and do not have the time to cue up the LP on the TT, I do not feel cheated by listening to the SACD.
